The Rise of AARagon: an MES AAR

Aragon, a kingdom in transition. In 1137 Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona became Prince of Aragon through his marrage of Petronilla of Aragon, uniting the two kingdoms. In the next several years, he conquered Tortosa, Fraga, and Lleida. Now, in 1150, many opportunities await King Ramon.

Chapter 1 (1150-1154) Allainces and Wars, Part A

On January 1, 1150, Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona and Prince of Aragon held a council with all of the nobles in the country in his capital, Barcelona. In this meeting, he informed them that some of the powers that were formerly held by them would now be held by the king himself. (+1 Centralization). This caused some minor discontentment amongst the nobles. On January 11, Guillem R. de Montcada was named general of Aragon's armies, and on Febuary first, Aragon's 2500 infantry and 1500 cavalry were ordered to Aragon, and 2000 more infantry began training. On March 13, Ramon Berenguer choose Ponc de Cervello to be another general of his armies.

Aragon was leader of an alliance with Rosselo and Provence, but Ramon Berenguer felt that they needed sronger allies. On April 25, the neighboring kingdom of Leon was invited to the alliance, an offer that they accepted. Relations between Leon and Portugal had been rapidly deteriorating, and on September 6, Leon declared war on the Portugese. On September 7, Ramon Berenguer honored the allaince, and the war begun.

Ramon Berenguer ordered the recruitment of 4000 infantry in Aragon to add to his army. On November 7, their training was completed, and the army began marching to Oporto. They arrived on December 18, and after a three day battle against 1500 Portugese infantry and 1000 Portugese Cavalry, a siege was begun. The city fell on July 21 of the following year, and the army began its march to Lisbon, arriving on August 7, 1151. A battle was fought against 5000 Portugese infantry, and on August 15 the siege begun.

Before the siege of Lisbon ended, however, Ramon Berenguer had another problem on his hands. Aquitaine declared war on his vassal Rossello on January 11, 1152, bringing in the whole French alliance. Ramon Berenguer was obligated to protect his vassal, so he entered the war.

On January 14, the king ordered the recruitment of 5000 infantry and 1000 cavalry in Catalonia. These troops were expensive, so on Febuary 14, he was forced to begin minting money to pay for the costs of the war. On March 16, Lisbon fell and Leon made a peace treaty with Portugal, cedeing Oportop to Aragon, and paying 47 ducats for damages. After this victory, the troops were ordered to Catalonia, where they merged with the new recruits, and then were divided into two groups. The army under Cerello began a siege of Bearn on July 11, and on July 30, after a brief battle, Montcada began a siege of Gasgogne.

Feeling that more troops were needed for his war, on August 17, 1152, Ramon Berenguer ordered the recruitment of 3000 infantry and 1000 cavalry in Gerona. On November 176, bad news came from the North. Aragon's ally and vassel, Rosselo, had been annexed by the French. Still, Ramon Berenguer's invasion of Aquitaine was going quite well. Aquitaine attacked the army in Gasgogne on Febuary 3, but by Febuary 17 the attackers were defeated by Montcada's brave host. On May 29, Montcada was attacked again, this tim by 24000 soldiers from Blois-Champagne. Victory was achieved by June 15, however at heavy costs. Montcada's army was now too small to continue the siege, so he awaited reinforcements.

On July 1, seeing an opportunity with Aragon's armies far away, the Portugese peasants in Oporto began to revolt. There was nothing that Ramon Berenguer could do at the moment, however. On July 11, Bearn was captured from Aquitaine, and Cervello began leading his army to reinforce Gasgogne.

During this time, the Reconquista of Muslim lands in Catalonia was continuing. By August 25, 1153, the last Muslim stronghols in Catalonia surrendered. Though there was a slight decrease in population, more taxes for Ramon Berenguer could be collected, and the revolts and uprisings incited by these Muslims would cease.

From September 30 until October 7, a grewat battle was fought in Gasgogne, resulting in the defeat of Aragon's armies. Frustrated, Ramon Berenguer signed a White Peace with Aquitaine. However, France had left the alliance, so w were still at war with them. The French armies attacked Gerona on October 9, but by the 18th they had been driven back.

The armies of Aragon advanced into Rousillion, begining asiege on November 11. However,, on Febuary 25, the King of Leon took command of the siege, and the Aragonese generals withdrew their armies and begun marching to Oporto to cruch the rebellion there. They arrived on May 19, and by May 28 the rebellion was crushed.

In 1150, Ramon Berenguer began compiling the code of laws, the Usatages de Barcelona, and by December 18, 1154, they were completed. This increased the realm's stability, and improved Ramon Berenguer's abilities to administer the Kingdom. It also helped the country's infrastructure.

On December 18, peace was signed with France, with 25 ducats payed by the Spanish alliance. On December 20, the King denied the peasants on Gerona the right to hold a fair, increasing his central authority and sparking a revolt.

Next segment of the game will be played today, and possibly an update tonight.

Well, I was bored last weekend so I posted 2 updates. Tonights chapter will be short, and it covers 1155-1160. Not much happened during that time, as you will see. I'll post it once I've finished my homework- 1-2 hours from now.

Edit- As I forgot to mention in the begining, constructive critism is welcome and appretiated, as I am new to AAR writing.

Chapter 2 (1155-1160) Into Italy

On the 26th of February, the armies of Aragon arrived in Gerona, and quickly crushed the rebellion that had been started there.

To strengthen the alliance of the two Spanish kingdoms. Ramon Berenguer IV's eldest daughter was sent to Leon to marry the prince of that kingdom. During this period, the merchants of Aragon were gaining more influence over the king, and they convinced him to begin building a powerful navy for Aragon to use in the Meditteranean Sea. On June 1, 1156, the King commisioned the construction of two galleys, Aragon's first warships. Naval buildup continued throught this period. By May of 1157, Aragon had developed new naval technologies.

Ramon Berenguer IV's nephew, also called Ramon Berenguer was the ruler of Provence. He encountered some problems in dealing with Toulouse, and asked his uncle for assistence. Ramon of Aragon gave 30 Ducats and 1000 of his finest men to his nephew and ally as a gesture of goodwill. This created increasingly greater Aragonese influence in the small country.

On December 21, the merchants guild of Barcelona gave a gift of 50 ducats to Ramon Berenguer IV, but along with this gift came letters from the merchants 'suggesting' that increased influence in the Italian Center's of Trade would be a 'wise' decision. In August, the King's second daughter was sent to marry a young prince in the Kingdom of Italy, and by November 8, the amies of Aragon arrived by ship in Provence. Ramon Berenguer IV proceded then to ask his nephew and ally to become his vassal, an offer which was accepted. By Febuary 1, 1159, the armies of Aragon had boarded ships in Cote d'Azur, and they arrived in the Ligurian Sea by February 19. War was declared on the weak and friendless trading Republic of Genoa, and they were under siege by March 17. The city finaly fell on July 24, 1160, and was incorporated into the growing Kingdom of Aragon.

Chapter 3 (1160-1168) A New King

Just after the incorporation of Genoa in July of 1160, the Cister order of monks came asking for land and money. Ramon Berenguer couldn't spare the cash, so he sent them away, losing the favor of two missionaries. On July 27, Leon declared war on Portugal. The King hesitently honored the alliance and joined the war. He ordered the training of 2000 men in Oporto to help his ally. On May 19, 1161, Leon annexed Portugal. On November 21, Leon agreed to become a vassal of Aragon.

On August 8, 1162, Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona and Prince of Aragon died. He was succeeded by his son, who was crowned as Alfonso II, King of Aragon and Count of Barcelona. In the first two years of his reign there was great peace and prosperity, and little out of the ordinary occured. This ended on November 21, 1164, when a comet was sighted in Oporto. This slightly disturbed the stability of the realm, and many saw this as a sign to plan revolts. 500 men deserted from the army's ranks in Oporto.

On February 17, 1166, Ramon Berenguer III of Provence died. He left his county to his first cousin, Alfonso II, King of Aragon. Alfonso decided to incorporate the county of Provence into his kingdom, causing some unrest (-2 stab) hurting relations with Toulouse. Rumors about Alonso's plans for expansion were spreading, frightning other monarchs. (+5 Bad boy) The annexation of Provence would later hurt the kingdom of Aragon.

In March of 1167, a plague of smallpox swept through the land. 1000 died in Catalonia, 750 died in Aragon. A full regiment of 1500 soldiers died in Provence. Trade decreased, and the realm's stability was damaged. Seeing this weakness, Arelate declared war on Seotember 30.

On October 26, 1000 infantry were ordered to begin training in Provence. On December 13, the armies of Arelate attacked, but they were repulsed by December 28. On January 17, reinforcements from Genoa arrived in Provence, increasing the forces there to approximatly 10000. On February 16, 1000 more infantry began training in Provence. The next attack began of February 18, and lasted until March 6. The armies of Aragon were forced to retreat. Seeing this weakness, on March 9, 1168, Murcia declared war on Aragon.

What about the moors. Reconquest is a holy duty. Saint George is your patron. Look for a picture of him slaying a dragon. The dragon are supposed to be the moors.
