Some excerpts from Advisor’s diary, December ’20-Aug ‘22
19th of December, 1420. Dear Diary. It’s now been a month since I arrived here with orders to assume command of Nyland’s brigade and drive away the ‘crusader’ scum. Don’t they know we have already done all the crusading necessary around here? Must be all that sausage. Anyway, they weren’t very hard to defeat, both the attack on the 20th of November and the counter-attack a week ago were repulsed, in no small part thanks to my own enlightened tactical input, which goes only shows that… (etc. etc.) 25th of June, 1422 Dear Diary. Time really flies when you have nothing to do but count the snow around you, doesn’t it? It does give you much time to think though. The schismatics in Moscow failed in their war against Novgorod and turned on the tiny princedom of Tver instead. Then one of my captains claimed that less realms following that deviant faith could only be a good thing. Bah! The fool! I was compelled to imprison him, fore his incompetence could harm us. The other officers didn’t like it, but we can’t have idiots running this army. No, divide and conquer, I say. I have a feeling that those Muscowites are going to be a real pain in the future… 3rd of August, 1422 Dear Diary. I don’t have much time write this, the knights under their new Wurstmeister have invaded Nyland, and despite my best efforts, we were driven back. The incompetence in the officer corps must run deeper then I expected. I have taken some steps to improve the quality, even if it means that we loose some of the poorer recruits. Anyway, I will continue once we reach Tavastehus. I wonder how things are going for Olof? 1st of June, 1421 Jylland Olof: So they captured Bremen? And got 228 gold just to stay away? Squire: That’s the message, Sir. Olof: Great! Send the fleet to pick them and the money up and return here. With Jylland liberated, we can finally strike at the Black Heart of- General, who are we going to attack now? General: Um, I hear that Pommern is nice this time of the year… Olof: Great! With Jylland liberated, we can finally strike at the Black Heart of Pommern! 2nd of August, 1422 The Black Heart of Pommern, i.e. Vorpommern Olof: What, are they attacking AGAIN? General, looking in the distance: Looks like it. Olof: Is that the third or fourth time this month? Don’t they have anything else to do?! General: I think it’s the third, Sir, they must be getting desperate. Look, they are charging at us with pointy weeds and rotted sticks. Olof: At least it’s not sausages like last time… More excerpts from Advisor’s diary 21st of August, 1422 Dear Diary. We arrived here at Tavastehus only yesterday. We will wait here for reinforcements from western Finland, which should arrive any day now. After that I think we should wait and observe the Teutonics’ moves, winter is approaching. I have heard rumours that Olof has captured Stralsund and is advancing towards Stettin. That’s in Pommern! What IS he up to?? Oh, and Muscowy has again proven its lack of tact, and attacked Suzdal, despite the connections of marriage between their ruling families! Barbarians. 29th of March, 1423 Dear Diary. That’s more like it! The Teutonics were the ones starving, not the brave defenders of Viborg! Weakened by hunger they were no match for my superior tactics and cunning plans. Finland is safe once again! 14th of October, 1423 The Black Spleen of Pommern, i.e. Hinterpommern Olof: I already told you, I don’t want to hire any drill instructors! German Salesman: Ach! Aber they are sehr gut! Sie could, ah, improve, ah, make Ihren Heer besser, ah, better, ja! Ja! Olof: Our army is already fine, thank you very much. Can’t you see I’m in the middle of a siege here? German Salesman: Aber-! Olof: NO!! Get lost! Sad German Salesman: Ach…. Olof: With that taken care of, I wonder how is the siege progressing? Breathless Squire: Sir, Sir! 20th of October, 1423 Peace negotiations between Sweden and Pommern, in Olof’s tent. Olof: So, you will give us Vorpommern as a base for our continued war against your allies, and you will pay us a yearly tribute. We, on the other hand, will not kill the lot of you. Does that sound acceptable? Pommeranian Negotiator: Aber was about the 93 geld? Olof: Uh, that was Denmark’s demand for peace. We Swedes just want half your territory. Sad Pommeranian Negotiator: Ach so… The southern army, under the command of general Brahe and Olof, after humbling Pommern. Note Danish army refusing to leave Mecklenburg, while Holstein controls Jylland. General Wallenberg and Advisor watches over Nyland. But what terrors can be found on the other side of the Gulf of Finland? But the war is far from over (well, not that far, as you will see next time). The first Swedish victory! I didn't get Mecklenburg, but I have plenty of time to do so over the coming centuries...

You seem to have pretty much the same goals as i did in my game as Sweden even with the same DP slider goals. So good luck have fun (it is) and a few tips:
Fighting Denmark is and uniting Scandinavia is not that difficult, but: 1. The Danes got quite a navy at the beginning, 2nd and that ones cruicial: Although Denmark has 2 trading posts in Greenland it does not know the sea zones between them!! (at least in 1.06 it did not) so its impossible to score a 100% warscore, which you´ll probably need to force - vassalize them. In my game the Teutonic Order was kind enough to conquer the Balics and the Kola peninsula from the Russians and then letting me inherit them so dont hit them too hard they might still be useful to you. After reunting Scandinavia and taking all of Denmark sans the Capital moving into Germany and Foce Vassalize - Diplo - Annexing them is a good and BB cheap way to expand. (and you can get a land connection with them too Sveland later when you move into the baltics and eastern Germany) Just because Sweden did not do so historically is no reason not to go colonial as with every nation Colonization is a good way to get provinces with the "right" culture and religion BB free. I got: Parts of North and South America, southern India, parts of the Spice Islands, Australia, Hawaii and the Siberian Corridor. Another ahistorical thing to do: Dont fight Russia (too much) their provinces are poor and General Winter is a killer opponent. I only fought one war in which i took Novgorod and their one Uguric province they had left and then repaired the relations. Mecklemburg is worth 10BB points at the beginning for the Cash strapped Swede. Neroon

Thanks for the tips, they are much appreciated! I have however, already played long enough for some of them to no longer be relevant.
I just have to write it up. And I don't plan to keep any European provinces, save those defined in the objectives laid out in the first post (cores, cultures, the Baltic coast, I would have gotten Mecklenburg if Denmark hadn't gotten there first, and if they hadn't conquered Pskov ). I do plan to go very colonial, however. I managed to trade maps with Spain in the early 16th century! And conquering and converting pagans to spread the true light of Protestantism has always been one of my main objectives.Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying my humble AAR.

Chapter IIIb: The Remains of a War
The war carried on for two more years, but after their victories in Pommern, Sweden took little part in the continued hostilities (except for sacking Lübeck twice, in July 1424 and June 1425). The Hanseatic alliance, on the other hand, found itself hard pressed by Denmark and Norway. Novgorod, feeling threatened by the Hansa’s support of the Teutonic Order’s continued drive into inland Russia, left behind their former policy of maintaining good trading relations with the Hansa and declared war in February 1424. Some thought the balance again shifted when Hannover joined the north German alliance in November 1424, but Wilhelm IV had his own problems to take care of, as many states considered his rabid expansionism a threat to their own security. He agreed to a cease-fire with Sweden only five days after his declaration of war. In early 1425 Sweden was again drawn into the conflict, as the Teutonic Order landed several small raiding parties in Österbotten. They were attacked and defeated in battle, but retreated into the deep Finish forests. There they were caused considerable grief before they could be brought to battle after several months of manoeuvring. Meanwhile the war in Germany drew to its close. In April 1425 Bremen was stormed and annexed by the Norwegians, four years after the city's surrender to the Swedish. And in July Sweden formally withdrew from the war, after being paid a 200 gold indemnity by the duke of Holstein. This sign of diplomatic independence is usually considered the start of the final schism between Denmark and Sweden, a schism which would keep growing until the final links snapped in 1435. Political situation in 1425. Note expanding Hannover. Olof: Looks good so far. Keep up the good work. Advisor: I will. You know, writing about all this does bring back some fond memories. I personally oversaw the construction of new fortifications in Savolax, after I had repulsed those Teutonic bandits, you know. Olof: Yes, I think you’ve told me about that… Advisor: Yes, fond memories… Anyhow, back to work. Chapter IV: The Fall of Novgorod The years 1426 and 1427 were years of peace. The central government, as it were, was growing more assertive. It encouraged peasants and young nobles with little land to move to Lappland, were they acted as colonists, slowly spreading the influence of the government were they went. There were several taxation reforms, largely financed by loot taken from Bremen and Lübeck, though these were somewhat hampered by widespread corruption in the expanding class of state officials. In May 1427, however, this short peace ended with a Swedish declaration of war against Novgorod, who was at the time weakened by several years of war against Muscowy and the Teutonic Order. This, like the peace of 1425, was a clear sign of Swedish independence, as no help from Norway of Denmark was called for. While the armies of Novgorod could offer little or no resistance, the fortresses did much a much greater job. The winter of 1427-28 was unusually cold, and many Swedish soldiers perished in the snow-clad forests. In the spring of 1428 the Swedish armies arrived in eastern Karelia, only to discover that the area was already under Muscowite occupation. Finally, in November, the fortress of Kexholm surrendered. In the summer of 1429 Swedish troops attempted a siege of Novgorod itself, but they were driven back by the fierce winter, and in 1430 an army from Novgorod took back Kexholm. After three years of war Sweden had gained nothing, and the new ruler of Novgorod, Yeufimei II, was not about to compromise. In the 5th of December 1430 Novgorod signed a peace treaty with the Teutonic Order, ceding a province to be able to focus their efforts on the Swedish threat. 20 days later, Christmas Day, Vyborg in Nyland was besieged and early the next year the last Swedish possessions in northern Karelia were retaken. Now, however, the command of the Swedish armies had passed on to general Engelbrekt. Engelbrekt was an unusual man. He had been born in the early 15th century in Mora in Bergslagen, as the son of a moderately wealth family of mining administrators. Soon he grew tired of the quiet life, and joined the armies preparing for the war in Germany. He took part in the fighting in Jylland, and was present at the storming of Stettin, although it is possible that he was wounded and took no part in the combat. By 1430 he had made quite a reputation for himself in the war in Novgorod, were he had led the assault on Kexholm. When the old commander of the army, general Wallenberg, passed away, he was the natural choice for a successor. He quickly proved his skill, by luring away the superior Novgorodian army at Vyborg, by marching on Kexholm. With their lines of supply threatened, they had no choice but to abandon their siege and come to Kexholm’s rescue. Here Engelbrekt again showed his military skill, as he crushed the army of Novgorod, tired by its forced march, when it tried to cross the river Suvanto, halfway between Vyborg and Kexholm. Several relief attempts were rebutted and Kexholm was taken by the 8th of January, 1432. A small force sent to capture Karelia was destroyed, and Engelbrekt decided that the only way to win the war was by a direct strike against Novgorod itself. After bribing a few officials of the Teutonic Order his troops passed through Ingermanland and came upon Novgorod from the west. A siege was initiated and Engelbrekt sent a massager asking for reinforcements. But those never came. Late 1432. Even Engelbrekt needs some reinforcements now and again. Furious at the apathy of the Swedish high command Engelbrekt held out for a month before even he had to retreat from the numerically superior forces of Novgorod. Engelbrekt was not finished, however, and in the summer of 1433 he once again laid siege to Novgorod. He was force to retire to Vyborg for the winter, but in 1434 came back with an army hired at his own ruinous expense, as little money was coming from Stockholm. It finally seemed as though Novgorod was about to fall, after seven long years of war. Then yet another disaster struck. The nobles of the army, dissatisfied by having to serve in the field for such long time with so little to show for it, and less then happy about a man of Engelbrekt’s low social status commanding the army, started to make demands. Their demands for expanded rights were accepted by the government, against the will of Engelbrekt, and parts of Finland were in open revolt against the taxes and forced recruitment. The realm was on the verge of civil war. Then Novgorod suddenly surprised everyone by agreeing to cede their trading colonies in Karelia and the Kola Peninsula, occupied by Sweden since the beginning of the war, for peace. A week later to the day, Muscowite troops entered Novgorod and what remained of the trading republic was annexed into the principality of Muscowy. Western Russia after the fall of Novgorod Sweden was a peace, but the long was had left the kingdom in an unstable and dangerous position. The future of the realm was far from secure… That’s it for now! A different take on telling the story of Sweden. I hope it is well recived!

The internal situation wouldn't allow for that, I'm afraid. Not only are both the peasants and the nobles unhappy, but general Engelbrekt will take center stadge in some intresting events very soon...

Sounds like the kingdom is in danger of dropping into civil war. Great update....Sounds like Engelbrekt will be deep into some sort of political crisis....

It's sounds better to go over the baltic and then into Novgorod. An attack over karelia is nothing you want to do.
But i should go for skåne first.
