Ducal Court of Saxony
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "The raindrop falls, the snow falls, the sun shines the thunder stikes us. But, still we stand together, united, as the wall of Dresden. May our Country of birth be flourshing as the Rose. May our Duke lead us in our struggle. May our Duke lead us in dark and light times. May us live together in peace, and may the Germans as the Saxons stay together." ________________________ The time in Saxony has been dark for a long time, in a short time have two Dukes, two brothers, died and been declared Heretics by the church. None of them is buried in sacred ground, none of them have gotten any rest. For some years after the fall of the two brothers, a man from that Palatinate ruled the country, but now the Third brother, Albrecht von Wettin, has stept up on the throne. ![]() Duke Albrecht V is now ruling the country. Inhaltsverzeichnis
![]() The Wettins, Duke Friedrich I's Line:Duke Albrecht V, (*1422) Prince-Elector of Saxony, Duke of Saxe-Wittenberg, Margrave of Meissen, Count of Aue. Duke Albrecht is the Duke of Saxe-wittenberg, and the Elector of Saxony. He was born in Meissen during a summer visit, and is the Godson of his Uncle Wilhelm von Meissen. In the year of 1430 was he adopted by Georg, Margrave of Leipzig and later Prince-Elector of Saxony, and at his 18th brithday (1440) he stept up on the Saxon Throne. Albrecht is a fair man, a man that belives in justice. He is determent to follow his father's line of ruling when he gets the crown. He is a very nice man, although he can get angry, and when he getts that, he is really furious. Dowager Duchess Katharina, (*1375) Dowager Duchess of Saxony. Daughter of Duke Heinrich von Braunschweig-Lüneburg and Mother of Friedrich I's children. She is a calm person, totally uninterested in politics, and that is why she wasn't leading the temporary Goverment that ruled under the leading of Prince-Elector Georg. She is deeply religious and is totally against the Restplace of her sons Friedrich and Sigismund which looks like a Cathedral. Countess Katharina, (*1417) Countess of Bitterfeld. Katharina is a nice little girl. Very talanted and she knows what she wants. Still she is, like her mother, very religious, and would not take a step without ask God for advise first. Also to the looks is she very alike her mother, the only thing that makes them very different is that Katharina the younger is very interested in politics. Countess Anna, (*1420) Countess of Naumburg. Countess Anna is very beautiful. Already as a very young child was she called the most beautiful girl in North Germany. her mind is also good, she is very intelligent, but rather quiet and shy. Her political interest is rather lame, she doesn't care too much, she doesn't have any time. She is almost all the time involved with her books. Countess Sophie, (*1421) Countess of Merseburg. Countess Sophie is much alike her oldest sister, Countess Katharina. The difference them between is almost only the fact that Sophie isn't as interested in the Church and God as Katharina is. She goes her own way, no matter what God wants, as long as it is good for her Country, God has nothing to say. she is a really good friend of her younger brother, Count Albrecht, and she will probably advise him in his decisions in the future when he gets the throne. Count Karl Wilhelm, (*1425) Landgrave of Thüringa, Count of Pirna. Karl Wilhelm was born in Paris in the year of 1425. His Godfather is the French King Charles VII, and he has got his name after him and his Uncle Wilhelm. Karl Wilhelm is a good man, he is loyal to his brother and have no intensions of doing any harm to anyone. He is actually the calmest of the brothers, he is not follishly kind, he has his principles, but he has the ability to controll himself and keep his relations to people on a strictly professional level. The Wettins, Duke Friedrich II the Tormentor's Line:Duke Friedrich II the Tormentor, (*1412 +1432) Ex Duke of Saxe-Wittenberg, Ex Prince-Elector of Saxony, Count of Wurzen, Ex Grand Master of the Order of Wettin. Duke Friedrich II was expelled as Duke of Saxony after repeated Heretic actions and excommunication by the Pope. He died by the sword of the Gelre Count Link Odenzaal in 1432. The Saxon Council gave him the name Friedrich the Tormentor after his death, but he is commonly known as Friedrich the Spoiled Heretic in other parts of Europe. Friedrich was a mad man, a sick man. He loved torture and to see people suffer, he terrorised the Dukes of Bremen and Pomerania for a long time and killed a sister and a brother of the Duke of Bremen, Johann. Duchess Meike (Heidi), (*1409 +1428) Ex. Duchess of Saxony. Meike was originally named Heidi Lehwaldt, and came from a rather simple family. She was by Duke Freidrich II confused for the sister of Duke Johann of Bremen, Meike, and he married her under that name. She gave birth to his son Friedrich Tristan, but died during the delivering. At that time had Friedrich II already left her and travelled down to Rumelia. Count Friedrich Tristan, (*1428) Count of Döblen. Count Friedrich Tristan is thhe son of Friedrich II and Meike. He is his father's oldest son, and by that he could have been Duke if the Council would had accepted his mother as a noble although she was born in a simple home. Friedrich Tristan is a misarble little boy, he looks almost as a copy of his ather, and that makes it hard for him. People avoids contact with him, so he is very lonely. Countess Elie, (*1413) Countess of Wurzen. Countess Eli was the Second wife of Friedrich II, and the daughter of the Wallachian Voivode Vlad II. She has nothing to speak about in the Saxon Politics, but she do have oppinons. She is much like her late husband, Friedrich II, who she loved to the bitter end, but she is not mad. She knows exactly what she wants, and tries to get it that way. Count Karl Sigismund, (*1430) Count of Döblen. Count Karl Sigismund is the oldest son of Friedrich II with Eli, and is of totally noble blood, which Friedrich Tristan isn't. He is really the one that could leagally claim the Saxon Throne. He is very much alike his father and mother, although not mad. His goals is to get power, that is what he wants. Countess Fredrika Eugénia, (*1430) Countess of Döblen. Fredrika Eugénia goes under the name Countess Eugénia. She is a beautiful girl, but she as her brother wants power above everything else. She has a mind made for ruling, and the often gets her will through. She is better to talk than her brother, and because of that she often wins over him in verbal fights. She is also not as evil as Count Karl Sigsimund. Wolfgang Pomener, (*1431) Wolfgang is the youngest child of Friedrich II, but the only one that he ever meet and spended his time with. He was Born on Gotland, but he and his mother Cecilia escaped to Skara in Västergötland after the death of Friedrich II at the Brandenburger boarder. Wolfgang ins't really mentaly healthy. He has a madness growning inside him, just like his father. He lives poorly with his mother. His lastname, Pomener, comes from the fact that Friedrich II during his staying was called Lord Friedrich von Pommern. It is from there the name Pomener comes. The Wettins, The Duke's Uncles, Ants and Their Lines:Wilhelm, (*1371 +1425) Margrave of Meissen, Landgrave of Thuringia (1381-1425) Wilhelm was the oldest brother of Duke Albrecht's father, and is by that the Duke's Uncle. He married Amelia of Masovia. August, (*1392) Count of Meissen Son to Wilhelm von Wettin. Cousin to the Duke. August stands high in Saxony. He is the leader of the great Ducal Army because of his massive military skills. He has offered the place as Military Advisor to the Prince-Elector during the reign of Georg von Wittelsbach, but turned it down as that would prevent him from spending as much hours as he do out in the field. Ammelie, (*1395) Countess of Meissen Daughter to Wilhelm von Wettin. Cousin to the Duke. Ammelie is a calm beautiful girl. She is married to the Ducal Intendent, Count Johann Jacob Winkelstein von Torgau. Ludwig, (*1406) Count of Meissen Son to Wilhelm von Wettin. Cousin to the Duke. Wilfried, (*1421) Count of Meissen Son to Wilhelm von Wettin. Cousin to the Duke. Count Wilfried is Duke Albrecht's closest friend. Marlene, (*1423) Countess of Meissen Daughter to Wilhelm von Wettin. Cousin to the Duke. Georg, (*1380 +1401) Margrave of Meissen, Landgrave of Thuringia (1381-1401) Brother of Friedrich I of Saxony. Theodor, (*1400) Count of Meissen Son to Georg von Wettin. Cousin to the Duke. Ludwig, (*1421) Count of Meissen Son of August von Wettin. Often appearing in Tourneys. The Wittelsbachs:Ex. Prince-Elector Georg von Wittelsbach, (*1368) Prince-Elector of Saxony, Count of Leipzig. Georg, a long time Count of Leipzig, took the Prince-Elector title after the death of Sigismund I. His intensions is to rule the Duchy until Count Albrecht reaches leagal age. He is a calm man, he has his own will, but not that really strong will to get it through. He is a good friend and like a father/grandfather of young Albrecht who really looks up to him. Maximilian von Wittelsbach, (*1391) Count of Leipzig. Son of the former Saxon Elector Georg von Wittelsbach. Other Important Saxons: Last edited by Kent I Wallmi; 18-11-2003 at 20:29. |

Including the four divisions of Westphalia, Angria, Eastphalia, and Holstein, it occupied nearly all the territory between the Elbe and Saale rivers on the east and the Rhine on the west; it bordered on Franconia and Thuringia in the south. Duke Henry I (Henry the Fowler) of Saxony was elected German king in 919, and his son, Emperor Otto I, bestowed (961) Saxony on Hermann Billung (d. 973), a Saxon nobleman, whose descendants held the duchy until the extinction of the male line in 1106. Lothair of Supplinburg (see Lothair II) bestowed it on his Guelphic son-in-law, Henry the Proud, who was already duke of Bavaria. In 1142 the duchy passed to Henry the Lion, son of Henry the Proud. The struggle between Henry the Lion and Emperor Frederick I ended with Henry's loss of all his fiefs in 1180. The stem duchy was broken up into numerous fiefs. The Guelphic heirs of Henry the Lion retained only their allodial lands, the duchy of Brunswick. The ducal title of Saxony went to Bernard of Anhalt, a younger son of Albert the Bear of Brandenburg and founder of the Ascanian line of Saxon dukes. Besides Anhalt, Bernard received Lauenburg and the country around Wittenberg, on the Elbe. These widely separate territories continued after 1260 under separate branches of the Ascanians as Saxe-Lauenburg and Saxe-Wittenberg. Electoral Saxony The Golden Bull of 1356 raised the duke of Saxe-Wittenberg to the permanent rank of elector, with the right to participate in the election of the Holy Roman Emperor. Electoral Saxony, as his territory was called, was a relatively small area along the middle Elbe. To the S of Electoral Saxony extended the margraviate of Meissen, ruled by the increasingly powerful house of Wettin. The margraves of Meissen acquired (13th–14th cent.) the larger parts of Thuringia and of Lower Lusatia and the intervening territories, and in 1423 Margrave Frederick the Warlike added Electoral Saxony; he became (1425) Elector Frederick I. Thus, Saxony shifted to E central and E Germany from NW Germany.![]() In 1423 got Margrave Friedrich of Meissen the title Duke of Saxony after he had helped King Sigismund in the Husit War. In 1423 Friedrich together with Bavaria, Hannover and Brandenburg formed Das Liga von Nürnberg, a defensive Alliance made to protect these four Duchys from the North West German Alliance witch made a threat towards the Central European Duchys. The Head Quarter was placed in Nürnberg and the Alliance Center of Education in Leipzig. Allready in May, the same year, troubles accured within the Liga. The Duchys of Saxony and Bavaria could not agree with different questions, mainly the one about expandure of the Liga. Duke Friedrich I of Saxony wanted the Liga to stay small, while the Duke of Bavaria wanted to expand. After an insult from a saxon representant in München of the Duke of Bavaria, the problem reached the surface and Duke Firedrich sent his uncle Wihelm to München to discuss the issue, while the Duke himself went to Madrid to be present at the wedding of King Charles of France. Saxony left the Liga shortly after, and time when on. In the year of 1424 the Liga declared war upon the Hussites in Bohemia. They won the war easily as the Liga now was extremly big. Bohemia was split between some of the most powerful contries in the Liga. This broke out the anger in Duke Friedrich I von Sachsen, to break up Bohemia was wrong, the Liga could easily instead remove the Hussites and install a new Catholic King, but so they did not. To make justice Duke Friedrich I joined the Northern Alliance consisting of among others Livona and Scandinavia. The Northerna Allaince faught for the realese of Bohemia, atleast Saxony did so. But, the war did not go very well, both Genoa and France joined the Liga and quickly Hessen occupied Dresden and whole Saxony. King Charles VII of France sent a letter to Duke Friedrich asking him to change side, as France and Saxony since long been close friends, and Friedrich considered to change side. To find out more about what France actually faught for he sent a letter to ask. It was revealed that France also faught for Bohemia, and now, when it seamed like everybody faught for Bohemia, Duke Friedrich wanted to declare himself neutral, it was no use for him ifghting when both sides claimed themselfes to fight for the same thing. But, he was refused to be neutral by Bavaira. Hopefully the war ended anyway in 1425, Bohemia was annexed by Austria and nothing negative happend to Saxony. In February 1425 Duke Friedrich and his Family escaped to Paris because of the war. When they arrived the war with the Liga was over, but some trubbles had come to hapend between the English and the French. The Young French King, Charles VII, needed advises and appointed Duke Friedrich von Saxe-Wittenberg Forgain Minister of France. In the same year a Imperal Election was held. There was two candidates for the title, Victor von Blommenstein and John II of Genoa. The Genoese candidate withdraw and Victor became Emperor. In 1426 Duke Friedrich died, leaving the Duchy to his eldest son, the 15-year-old Friedrich, but, instructed his favorite son Sigismund to be is advisor in every single question. At once Friedrich begun to terrorise his fmily and the servants. He did not want the brother, Sigismund, as advisor and sent him to Anhalt where he could not interfear in national questions. Allready before his crownation Friedrich was hated among the European rulers. And allready people was thinking about replacing him with his younger brother Sigismund. Friedrich did not really behave himself on the throne of Saxony. He got enemies everywhere, he tortured innocent people and did other discusting things. At his coronation he fell inlove with Meike of Bremen. He asked her Brother, Johann III of Bremen, for her hand. Johann did not really want to give him her hand, but Friedrich managed to reach an agreement where he promised to loan Bremen the entire state treasuary of Saxony in a coming war, in excange for Meikes hand. The war never came, but Friedrich still had Meike. But, he did something stupid. Without the permission of Johann he took Meike to Dresden, in an almost kidnapping way. Meike was permanently taken away from him. Johann III was the worst enemy of Friedrich II. And at Johanns wedding in Stettin 1427 with one of the sisters of Joachim the Grief, Friedrich sent a torture victim to represent him. In the year of 1427 Friedrich begun being investigating for heathen rituals. Friedrich now was what you would call insane. He did not always know who he was, or what he did. And he had found a woman who he actually thought was Meike, and at once he heard about the investigations, he married her. A war with the G-S Alliance containing of Bremen, Pommeria and Gelre, was knocking on the door. Saxony had no chance in the war. Even though Gelre and Bremen had some problems with the troops reaching Dresden, was the G-S Alliace victorious. First Sigismund, the brother or Friedrich II and the rightful heir after Friedrich, was picked up in Dessau. He followed the troops to Dresden, when a battle was fought who the G-S Alliance won easily. After that the siege of Dresden begun. Meanwhile Sigismund was coronated Duke Sigismund I of Saxony outside the walls and the cousin of Duke Friedrich I, Margrave Friedrich of Meissen, also know as Friedrich von Wettin, was elected Regent. The other cadidate, Georg von Braunzig who had led the goverment while Friedrich I was Duke, lost big and was removed from the highest chair in the council to a lower one. During the siege Friedrich II managed to leave the castle with help of the newly coronated Duke Sigismund. Friedrich left out in the Dark night, an none knew where. In the peace which was signed after the fall of Dresden was Saxony forced into the G-S Alliance under the reign of Friedrich von Wettin. Friedrich von Wettin and the young Duke, only twelve years old, did not agree very well and Duke Sigismund decided to move to Sassnitz and etablish a new court there. Ex Duke Friedrich II was out travelling in Europe for some time, but in the end of 1428 he asked for exile in ayn country. Wittenberg offered Friedrich to live and rule in their newly conqured lands in Rumelia, an offer that Friedrich happily accepted. In early 1429 he arrived to begin his ruling over the province with major Muslim inhabitants. Giant Fire in the Library in Leipzig destroyed papers from this period, 1429 - 1440. In 1440 did Duke Albrecht raise the Saxon throne. Both Sigismund and Friedrich had been dead for quite a time then, and they did not lay in blessed soil. Duke Friedrich fell for the swrod of the Gelre Baron Link van Oldenzaal, and Sigismund took his life during the Imperial Elections in Frankfurt. When Sigismund died was Albrecht to young to step up as Duke himself, and the Emperor forbid him to, because of the problems with the young Dukes Friedrich and Sigismund. So until he was 18 years old, had Saxony been ruled by an old man, from the beginning from The Palatine, Georg von Wittelsbach. Last edited by Kent I Wallmi; 28-10-2003 at 18:09. |

In the new ducal capital of Albrechtsburg, the sun shone down as men arrived, foreign men, men from Bohemia. Their leader was assisted as he dismounted. He strode into the palace of Wettinerburg am der Elbe quickly, despite his girth, and sought out the court:
"I beg permission to appear before His Lordship, Duke Albrecht, patron and namesake of this fair city. I am Count Blazej Rozmberk, brother of His Majesty's trusted delegate to the Empire's Diet, anointed representative of the Crown's interests to this grand city and Duchy. I have long remembered the good intentions of Saxony towards our Kingdom, though the Austrian menace prevailed nonetheless in their perfidy, and thus I would be pleased to remain here. I also bring word from the royal court in Praha that my counterpart, Count von Torgau, has been welcomed by His Majesty in all due fanfare and is always welcome in the Crown's lands."

The Guard Chief of the North Entrence to Albrechtsburg, Baron Johann Friedrich Alberheit, looked at the Ambassador.
"Sir, I have been told that we could expect you here, you can enter. Please follow the road straight to the Ducal gate and give the guards there this paper." He wrote a short note and out his name under it. "So, take this" The Bohemians walked forward and were soon inside the Ducal Palace, Wettinerburg am der Elbe. "Gentlemen, welcome, from Bohemia I assume, please, have a seat." Said Duke Albrecht when they entered the main room. |

Count Rozmberk, after standing and bowing before the Duke, gave his plaintive case:
"Your Lordship, I do represent His Majesty, King Ladislav, and I bring urgent news and a request: His Imperial Majesty Joachim has revealed the claimant to the Austrian throne, Markus Jager, to be in conspiracy against the Emperor and the King, for the explicit purposes of overthrowing the Emperor chosen by the Prince-Electors, including both His Majesty and Your Lordship, and again annexing Bohemia to his rump state. His Imperial Majesty has declared Austria a rogue state, led by a usurping leader who refuses to abide by the laws of the Empire or respect the sovereignty we possess and we have hard fought for. For this reason we now find ourselves in a war of necessity, a war of survival, pitted again against Austrian aggression, a situation that we find far too similar to that of less than a score past. I cannot forget the support Saxony provided to aid the establishment of a Christian monarchy in fair Bohemia, and I ask that in that selfsame spirit that Your Lordship aid us in our time of need, to prevent Austria's belligerent aggression from again consuming innocent princedoms of the Empire."

Duke Albrecht looked at the Bohemian Count. He though about how his Brother, Duke Sigismund, had been fighting for Bohemia, and their right to freedom from their oppressors, the Austrians. Then he though about how highly, both Sigismund hand their father, Friedrich I, had valued neutrality. It was a hard case, would he loan this man money, and by that be involved in this war, join the war on the Bohemian King's side, or just stay out of trouble?
"Dear Count Rozmberk, you come with hard questions, questions which had answers, but answers to needs some time to figure out. I will sleep on it, and then I will return to you with an answer. Meanwhile can you install yourself as Bohemian Ambassaador here in Albrechtsburg, it is not a big place, but the houses are fine, and every single one of them is perfectly identical. Please, honour me by being the first non-saxon to live here, pick a residence." Duke Albrecht handed a map over the city to the Count. "Of course, it will not cost you or your King a thing, the house will still be Saxon property, but, you can review it as your for as long as it serves as Saxon Embassy." |

Blazej sighed privately, and responded to the Duke:
"I must thank Your Lordship for your consideration and thought. It would do me great honor to have residence in the closest house to the ducal palace, that would be the first of the Ducal Street, the eastern half, from the looks of it. I thank you again for your generosity and bid you good day." Rozmberk left the Duke and the palace to kick a small stone in the courtyard on his way out. It skittered across its brothers in the stone paving, falling into the dirt at the end, and he promised himself that the stone was Austria, not Bohemia.

9 pm, Duke Albrecht was out on his daily walk in his City, the new City of Albrechtsburg. It was a rather silent morning, only the singing birds were heard. These silent mornings was not that rare in Albrechtsburg, after all was the city just built, and not many people had moved into the houses yet. And, figured Albrecht, there was a great chance that the mornings always would be this silent, as only aristocrats, ambassadors and rich men would have residences in Albrechtsburg.
Young Albrecht’s mind was in particular occupied by one thought, the Bohemian issue. He perfectly knew that both his father and his brother had hold a guarding hand over Bohemia for some reason. He was too young to remember the beginning this, but he had read about it. It all had started with an alliance called Das Liga von Nürnberg. He never understood why, but according to what he had read, the Liga leader, the Duke of Bavaria, Albrecht was his name, and Friedrich I of Saxony had come into quarrel. Of what had never Albrecht really got a hang of, but it was something. Anyway, the Liga went to war with the hussites, which was the right thing to do. Saxony nor their Dukes had never supported the hussites. But, the Liga managed to bnring the hussites down, and it was here where the Saxon Duke became upset. The Liga had no intention to reinstall the Bohemian King, there had the intension to divide it between them. And it was here where Saxony joined the war. Since that has a invisible bond always been between Saxony and Bohemia. But Albrecht didn’t have much knowleadge about the Imperial situation, not yet. He had just raised the throne, on his 18th birthday. But he had the intentions to try to find out how this were, and he had made the decision to help the Bohemian King if it wasn’t to risky, or to difficult. As much as he wanted to continue the family tradition of aiding the Bohemians could he not risk his own Duchy. He took a boat over Elbe to the other side, to the North part of the City. There he walked to the burial place of his two older brothers. It was a big building, and it raised over all the other buildings. Even if no one wanted to admit it, the building looked exactly like a cathedral. The only things that where missing were catholic symbols, church bells and things like that. The cathedral was guarded all the days and nights, so Albrecht was let in by two guards, and entered the yard inside the great doors. When he was inside the building, he sat down between the graves of his two brothers. He went here a lot, almost every time when he had a hard decision to make. He just sat there, just sat there hand felt the calmness. |

Duke Albrecht looks at the Bavarian man.
"Dear Friend, it makes me happy to recieve words from the Bavarian Duke, and that he takes the time to send me a man to be his representant here in Saxony. I will gladly accept you as Bavarian Ambassador, and your Lord may soon recieve a Saxon man to represent me in München. But, I have two questions for you, first, what is your name and second where in this city would you like to etablish your Embassy?" Duke Albrecht smiles and hand the man a map over Albrechtsburg. |
