Emirate of Karaman
The emirate of Karaman, situated in the southern regions of the Anatolian peninsula. A land of infinite beauty and wealth. Standing in the gateway between the old roman heartlands in anatolia, now a turkish stronghold and the old arab caliphate in the east it is a land of endless roads and opportunities.
Ruled by an emir, feed from the grip of the Osmanli by the mongol warlord Tamerlane, it sits a peaceful and prosperous emirate even in the looming shadow of a restored Ottoman state. Ruled by its newest emir, a man named Adem Baris the future of the small emirate is unknown to all but God. May the prosperity of the past carry into the future and Allah bless us in every endeavor. |

Emir's residence
![]() Mamure Kalesi, the residence of the Emir of Karaman. Built on the southern anatolian coast by the Romans centuries ago, it was rebuilt by the crusading forces of Europe and the Rum Seljuk into a formidable structure. Looming over the landscape, it projects the power and prestige of the emir and serves as the central location of diplomatic activity within the emirate. Nation: Karaman Head of State: Adem Baris Player: Jaron Religion: Sunni Culture: Turkish, Arabic, Slavonic Stats: 2/1/2/3/1 --> [2/1/2/3/1] Provinces: 3 Ports: 1 Owned: Taurus, Konya, Adana Important members of the court: Adem Baris Emir of Karaman Born: 1420 Backround: The young emir of Karaman. He inherited the emirate from his uncle, who became Emir after the last emir died. His uncle was poisoned however, and the throne passed to the young Adem. He was born in Smyrna and speaks turkish and greek; He is illiterate however but does his best to hide the fact by employing a wide array of secretaries and notaries. When his signature is necessary, he uses a copper stencil. Iskander Pasha Vizier of Karaman Born: 1394 Backround: The advisor to the emir, and the former emir. He has served in the Ottoman and Karaman army. Retiring at age 40, he became a wealthy merchant in the Adana region. Financing the current emir's uncle Ibrahim after the last native emir died heirless, he was rewarded with the title of vizier and 5000 acres of land outside the city of Larende. His vast experience in military, financial and diplomatic matters makes him an invaluable asset to the inexperienced young emir and he is his voice in many matters of state. Trade information
The emirate stands at a crossroads between west and east and while not as advantageous a position at others, it keeps the coffers of the emir full enough to make the region prosper.
Production: Wool, Salt, Fish Demands: Grain, Iron, China The turkmen who arrived with their herds leave their mark upon Karaman, as those in the mountains of the Taurus region still tend to their flock. The collected wool is then sent along on market to Damascus and Constantinople. The marshes in the northern parts of the emirate provide a low quality but ample supply of salt which always fetches a fair price on certain markets. The production of salt is the primary source of income for Karaman. The eastern ports in the area around Alexandretta, or [i]Iskanderun[/b] are a ripe fishing area. With the poor quality of land that makes up Karaman, the supply of fish does much to prevent famine but grain must still be imported. Other than that, the emirate imports large quantities of iron for the production of weapon and for construction. The wealthy merchants and nobles of Karaman also provide a profitable market for eastern chinaware and with Karamans position on the road from Persia into Constantinople and Europe, it is assured there will be no lack of supply. Trade agreements: None. |

The emir reads the note handed to him and tucks it into his robes. He orders one of his secretaries to prepare a favorable response to the Venetians.

A finely dressed Italian enters the court, escorted by several soldiers wearing glittering, gold inlaid armor. The Italian steps before the Emir, bows, and speaks.
"Emir of the Karaman, I am Luigi Condrettinelli, a representative of Her Majesty, Queen Maria of Sicily, Regent of the Roman Empire in Imperator Basilios III's minority. Her Majesty the Queen hopes that you shall accept me into your court, and invites you to send a representative to her court in Palermo."

![]() A letter arrives from the Caliphs Court in Cairo. "Noble Emir of Karaman, Adem Baris It is a great pleasure that the Erimate of Karaman once again is ruled by a good muslim. Unfortunally the last Emir was an heretic and condemn himself to an eternal lif of pain in Hell, but with such a faithfull follower as yourself Im sure of that Karaman will always see the path of Allah and his Prophet, Muhammed, peace be upon him, clear before itself. You are here by welcome to send a representative from your Ulama to Cairo, to participate in discussions concerning matters of faith and to represent your Emirate. The Most Honorable Caliph, Maalik Ar Rasheed, is looking forward to meet him. signed by Abdul Al-Rasool, Imam, advisor to the Caliph and Head Court Offical of the Caliphate Court."

Inside Mamure Kalesi
Within the walls of his Anatolian stronghold, Emir Adem Baris and his advisor Iskander Pasha stroll through elegant archways and past turkish baths and extravagent rooms.
Placing an arm around the Venetians shoulder, the Emir takes him into a large room overlooking the coast. Bidding the man to select from one of several cushions spread about the room, Adem explains: "Karaman as you know is only now recovering from the excesses of our last ruler who decided to convert himself and our people to the orthodox faith. We hold no qualms against your faith, but the mullahs, imams, caliphs, khans and emirs around us watch us with a suspicious eye. Now is not the time for us to cozy ourselves up to any christian prince, in matters of faith we must remain distant and separate. I ask only that the men you send here be of no religious order, and no men of such ways will be permited within my emirate, and I will not tolerate any attempts to force doubt upon our faith by any Venetian, merchant, diplomat or otherwise. As far allowing Venetian shipping in this area, we may be able to give you limited access but an entire port..." The emir smiles and motions to his advisor, he speaks. "We're not entirely closed to the idea, but it would have to be negotiated. As we already have some negotiations with the Genoese on the matter we must consider the matter carefully. But for now, let us speak to you of our proposal. Karamans position between Anatolia and Greece and the Persians lands of the Timurid Khan provide us with an excellent opportunity to set up a new trade route through our emirate which we hope shall run from the port of Isfahan and end in the port of Venice. We are completely unable to ship these goods anywhere west of perhaps Smyrna or Constantinople, and this is where your help is needed. We will negotiate with the Timurids for the import of precious...commodities from India and the eastern lands which we hope with your help with pass through Larende and then north into Greece and Italy. A fine profit for all, I think. We need you to advise us on the necessary port expansions, contracts, agreements and such for such a trade route to work but we think that the agreements we will sign will allow you generous amounts of profit and the tolls and taxes we collect on the goods passing through Larende should enable us to vastly increase our own income. This is the reason I have asked you to travel here, and now that our ideas are known to you, I would very much like to hear your opinion on the matter." Both the Emir and advisor sit facing the Venetian and await his response. |

The emir turns to his advisor and whispers something into his ear. He nods to the Venetian and rises from his seat, taking his leave of the conferance.
Alone, Iskander Pasha leans back and puffs from a small opiate pipe. "Your words are words of patience with your eyes on a distant horizon. Ours is one of decisiveness as our situation has dictated to us no such luxury as you have in Venice. We have no major exports, a wide list of required imports..we can barely afford to feed our own population with the Osmans controlling most of Anatolian grain production! You ask for us to give Venice these special rights and offer us nothing in return. Do we appear to you to be begging for the crumbs from your table? We have asked you here, and treated you as an honored guest to assist us in a major endeavor from which both Karaman and Venice stand to profit greatly. Our ultimate goal is to subvert the Danube Syndicate which lays in conflict with our own goals AND yours. We ask for your assistance for in these lands it is widely known your powerful republic is supreme in the matters of trade..peerless in commercial matters." Iskander Pasha leans in a bit and sets his pipe aside. With a stroke of his hand, he forces all the various books and decor off a small table between himself and the Venetian and clasps his hands under his chin before continuing. "The table is clear my friend. If you wish to expand your influence here, you are welcome to it, but we must be justly compensated. Karaman is like a fig, ripe for the picking, all we need of you is fairness and your assistance in our short and long term goals. We take a great risk in asking this of you, but there is no hurry. A room has been prepared for you, and no doubt you will wish to think this matter over and ask your Doge's counsel. Now go, our servants will see you to your quarters." He leans back and puffs once more on his pipe, clapping his hands, two men come for the Venetian and usher him to his room. |

A messenger, accompanied by a prisoner and several guards, enters the Emir's court. The messenger hands the Emir a letter.
"Emir Adem Baris, As you know, the Kingdom of Hungary has declared a war against the Roman Empire. Many battles have been fought, but the pitiful Hungarian army is not able to breach the walls of Mistra. And, even better, the self-proclaimed King of Hungary was caught, along with his second in command, pillaging a village. My men seized them, and slaughtered his guards to a man. Emir Adem, the Karamanli Turks are most powerful, and we would be honored for a friendship to develop between the Roman Empire and the Karamanli Turks. As a token of our goodwill, we present this prisoner, Ugo's second in command, the traitor Marczaltovi. I'm sure he would make an excellent eunuch. Queen Maria of Sicily, Regent of the Roman Empire"

"Emir of Karaman,
Long has there been conflict and dispute between our realms. I invite your delegation to Bursa to resolve such feelings of aminosity and once again allow the Turkish people to prosper. Furthermore, an agreement of trade and mutual interest may be at hand." Dictated in Bursa, Candarli Halil Pasha |

A delegate arrives from the Ottoman Empire and bows before the Emir.
"Most Esteemed Emir of Karaman, I have come as a representative from the Ottoman Empire to mark the presence of the Sultan in your realm. Hopefully our nations can be binded in friendship. Also, the Vizier is curious as to the response to his last letter. As he still is yet to receive one, we wonder if perhaps one of your messengers was incompetent and failed to deliver the message to Bursa." The man bows and awaits a response. |

The bored looking young emir cupped his hands and rested his chin along his fingertips. He gave a look to the captain of his bodyguard and issued a small nod.
The captain raised his hand to the assembled ghazis and snapped his fingers twice. With a quick fluid motion the guards assembled around the Ottoman delegate and seized his arms and held his head steady, forcing him to gaze upon the emir. The emir raised his head and rose to his feet. "Now, you inconsiderate whelp, you were saying..?" |

The Ottoman yelped angrily,
"I don't know what kind of people you are used to dealing with, but I am an Ottoman servant. Now, I demand to know what of the letter my Vizier sent to you!" |
