A nervous newbie's first AAR, playing as Scotland

Helloo!

I'm thinking of writing an AAR for the first time. I feel that I am a fairly good player now, and I want to try something new. I am hoping to get som help and support from all of you "veterans" here

I want to rewrite the messages from the savefile that has the most importance for my game in this AAR. I am a good writer I think, but my historical knowledge is too small to dramatise the whole thing like som of the greatest writers here tends to do
That will be too much research for me, and I'm afraid I don't have the time to do that. But I will try to make the events a little more living than a "dry" logbook.

i must warn you: It will take long time to get to the end of the story, but I will give it a try. And from my own experience, I know that screenshots are an important supplement to the story, so I will therefor post rather many of such.

before I start write I will also provide you with some background info. such as difficulty settings, wich version I'm playing and so on. But first of all, I would really appreciate some feedback and help to how to write from the audience.

Thanx!

Ulyanov

Well, I'm not what you would call a veteran AAR writter for sure, except perhaps in the Spanish forum... but don't worry about it. Just try to enjoy your game and your writting and the words will flow easily. You don't have to do research if you don't want to... you can center in a family, or any other focus, giving a more restricted and narrow viewpoint, but not for that less fun!

I hope you the best for your first AAR! Don't worry and just write

Thank you!

By the way, can you see the posted image on the bottom of this page?

Here it used to be an URL to another thread, but I have removed the picture in my post. It was just to see if people could see my screenshots in this thread.

Well, here are some background information:

- Playing GC with the original 1,06 patch with no modifications.

- Difficulty settings: Normal/normal
(I don't want to make a complete fool of myself)

- I will not reload except if a moment of distraction leads to an unintended uptake of loans.

- Goals:
I haven't made any ultimate goals for the end in 1819, but the first one is surely to gain complete superiority of the British Isles (getting rid of Eire & England).

*Ulyanov leaves the forum for a while to resize and prepare his precious screenshots from the first wars *

Well, good luck. Even though you probably won't need it. Oh, and be nice to Eire. Or I'll make unkind comments about you in the back of the forums.

Edinburgh, January 1419:

King James I (dip 4, adm 6, mil 5) is at war together with France, Auvergne, Provence, Bourbonnais and Savoy against England & Co. France is leader of alliance.

Not to be the leader of an alliance is very "scary" as you never know when the peace trumpet is blown. In some cases you are saved by the bell (trumpet), but when I have the upper hand, it's the most unwelcome sound I can think of.

Anyways, this is how the story goes:

At first, nothing seems to happen, but then, in march 1419, England decides to launch an attack in Lothian. This battle was an uneven battle where Buchan Douglas (rank 1, move 3, fire 2, shock 3, siege 0) starts his long run in victories against King Henry V of England's men. I send my troops southwards to wipe out more English armies on their own land. (The English had their hands full with the French on the continent). Half a year after, I have initiated a couple of sieges, and this is how it looks:

29. August, 1419

As you see, the english are recruiting troops constantly to get the scottish out of their provinces, but with no luck. Sending 1000 at the time never works
This war made me take up two loans unwillingly, so I didn't want it to last too long. So after capturing Northumberland and Yorkshire 26. June, 1420, I gave them a peace proposal: English must hand over the province of Yorkshire to the Scottish Crown immideately if they don't want to get slaughtered! A generous offer they just couldn't resist

Yorkians are happy to have become inhabitants of Scotland rather than the backwards neighbours in the south

A good start to Scotland.

Why take Yorkshire instead of Northumberland?

Probably because Yorkshire is a richer province.

Nice AAR so far! What's up next? Eire?

Yorkshire has 9 in Basic Taxvalue, Northumberland has 7. But that is not the main reason. As said earlier I intend to get control over the British Isles. When England get all their events where the revoltrisk increases, I can get Northumberland for free if its under revolt control long enough. We'll see if this tactic works. And also, Yorkshire was more valuable for England than Northumberland.

A bit of encouragement to conquer England from auld Bobby Burns:

ROBERT BRUCE'S MARCH TO BANNOCKBURN

SCOTS, wha hae wi' WALLACE bled,
Scots, wham BRUCE has aften led,
Welcome to your gory bed,
--Or to Victorie!

Now's the day, and now's the hour;
See the front o' battle lour;
See approach proud EDWARD's power--
--Chains and Slaverie!

Wha will be a traitor knave?
Wha can fill a coward's grave?
Wha sae base as be a Slave?
--Let him turn and flee!

Wha, for Scotland's King and Law,
Freedom's sword will strongly draw,
FREE-MAN stand, or FREE-MAN fa',
--Let him on wi' me!

By Oppression's woes and pains!
By your sons in servile chains!
We shall drain our dearest veins,
--But they shall be free!

Lay the proud Usurpers low!
Tyrants fall in every foe!
LIBERTY's in every blow!--
--Let us Do or Die!

In times of peace I spend all my money on tax-collectors. This had to be done immideately as I already had two loans and red numbers in my finances. So, I just let time pass by and hope that no one attacks me in this period.

22. April, 1424: Plague in The Highlands. (Aaargh!) Very annoying that this happened in a province poulated only by 2000 inhabitants. With around 1000 sick and depressed people left it will take ages before it grows into a cosmopolitan city (if it ever does).

6. July, 1424: Event: The Ransoming of the king and Purge of the Highland Chiefs
The rightful king of the Scots, James I, had been imprisoned in England since 1406. During his imprisonment the country was ruled by this Uncle Robert Stewart (1406-1420), 1st duke of Albany, and later his son Murdac (1420-1424). Neither of the two, nor the majority of the Scottish nobility, had any real interest in seeing the return of a strong king back on the throne. It thus took until 1424, 18 years, before the ransom was collected and finally sent to England to have the king freed. Historically James I took his revenge by executing Murdoc and a few other noblemen and taking a lot of actions to reduce the power of the Scottish nobility. He also managed to introduce a lot of other good reforms to strengthen Scotland as a country

I went for "The King is ransomed and takes revenge on the nobility" and got the following changes:
*Aristocracy: -2
*Centralization: +2
*Stability: -2
*Revoltrisk changed by +3 for the next 156 months.
*Monarchs administrative skill changed by 2 for the next 156 months.
*Basic taxvalue in Lothian +1
*Basic taxvalue in The Grampians +1
*-200 ducats

7. May, 1425: England declares war on Eire

3. June, 1426: Internal Trade Ordinance happens to Scotland, and the basic taxvalue in the Grampians are now 7 (it is 5 in the beginning of the game).

4. October, 1426 I decide to leave the alliance I had with France & Co as I didn't want to be dragged into a war while saving money. I was in doubt when I took this decision because france is a useful ally in case of an attack from England.

21. February, 1437 Event: The assassination of James I
In February 1437 James I was assassinated by conspirators within the nobility looking to gain control of the crown for Walter Stewart, earl of Atholl. James I's wife however quickly saw to it that the responsible where tortured to death. However James son was only 6 years old and the Scottish kingdom was thrown into a time of power struggle between mainly 3 families (the Crichtons, the Livingstons, and the Douglases) for control of the young Scottish king and realm

This means that a new monarch gets the throne, and that is
King James II (dip 5, adm 6, mil 5). Slightly better than James the first.

19. May, 1441: New land claimed.
*Population in Yorkshire +2000
*Manpower in Yorkshire +1
*Basic taxvalue in Yorkshire +1
Wonderful!

18. November, 1441: All of my loans are finally repaid, and I'm thinking of grabbing some more provinces from my neighbours. Who's next? Eire or England?

17. January, 1446: Castile annexes Aragon. Three years earlier they also annexed Portugal (!) This seems promising for Castile/Spain. Very good start for them, they will certainly become a big threat in the future.

14. November, 1447: In the year of 1444 Eire decides to declare war upon Scotland. Gelre joins Eire, while Münster dishonours the alliance. I wasn't really prepaired for a war yet, so I just had to defend myself as good as possible. On this day (14. November) Eire came with a peace proposal: they wanted all of my ducats! Silly Irish people, I only had 1 left...

It sure will be. I'm very fond of details, so I guess this will be a long story. Wonder if I can clear some time to work, study, play and write this AAR. No problem, I'll just quit sleeping.

I gave up sleeping a while ago, my friends told me there would be negative effects but I lack the feeling in any part of my body to sense negative effects. Besides, I'm saving a fortune not having to keep lights on, I can't tell the difference anymore anyway. Nice start. I have my own Celtik AAR going on, though with Eire. I hope to be keeping up with this one.

5. March, 1452: Event: The Breaking of the Douglases
In 1449 the king James II was old enough to marry and reclaim control of his kingdom. He immediately seized the Livingston estates, but was a bit more lenient against the Douglasses. In a quarrel in 1452 however he himself stabbed William, 8th Earl of Douglas, to death. Historically this was the end of the power of the Douglas family and 3 years later all their land was confiscated and their castles demolished

I went with "Destroy the castles and confiscate the lands of Douglases"
*Centralization +3
*Aristocracy -1
*Stability -2
*+150 ducats
Well, well, well! This should be enough to kick some butt!

17. May, 1453:17th of May is the Norwegian national day - a day for celebration. Therefor, I thought it would be suitable to declare WAR on someone this day. And so I found myself in a war (alone) against Eire. Once again Gelre joined the war and Münster, who had joined their old alliance since last war, once again dishonoured the alliance.

5. June, 1453:

Nice naval battle at the beginning of the war

In July the same year, Eire joins their alliance in a war against Burgundy and its four allies. Good for me, maybe they'll also send some troops to the continent besides trying to defend the island from the invading scotsmen. 22. September is the date when the sons of Scotland first sets their feet on hostile, Irish land. 12000 men are being "welcomed" in Munster by a small Irish army of 5000 men which are - of course - easily wept out. This while The Strathclyde Fleet returns to Irish Sea to pick up fit and ready reinforcements. In February the following year the fleet reaches St.Georges channel and starts to unload troops in the province of Leinster. While the fleet are constantly winning the naval battles, and the army in Leinster are nicely defendig themselves from Irish attacs from the north, 2. May 1454 Scotland finally captures Munster from Eire. A month later Scotland looses a relatively small battle in Leinster. A downperiod for the scots for a year loosing a couple of minor battles before the new reinforcements arrives in March 1455. After this it's only going in one direction: wins for Scotland; the men are batteling it out in the provinces of Connaught and Leinster, and gaining control of both provinces by the end of 1456. After Scotland also have initiated a siege in Ulster 18. September the same year, it looks like everything else but a bright future for Eire...

*Ulyanov really hopes Phalanx doesn't read this*

At least you don't have to worry about annoying me. Bohemia is pretty far from Scotland...

I wonder if Munster didn't join the war because of the confusion with names with the province in Ireland?

I like the format quite a bit. The timeline is well written and goes into great detail with both a good story and a healthy description of the game mechanics going on in the background. Very nice, I'll be keeping up on this one.
