One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer

Warning: Not for the faint of heart!

As many of you are undoubtedly aware, I’ve been writing a ton of stuff recently but I’ve been afflicted with a little bit of writer’s block in the last couple of instalments of my Eminence Grise AAR. I’ve been contemplating starting a second AAR for a while now, but nothing particularly struck my fancy in terms of style or content or country. I wanted, so to speak, to let loose with a bit of frivolity since everything else I’ve been writing of late has been of a largely serious and historical nature.

What’s been stopping me is that, with all my other writing commitments, I don’t think it would be wise to start another full-length AAR, and I just don’t find the later (shorter) scenarios as much fun to play. They’re great to read about, but I prefer those dangerous early years as far as game play goes.

--------------------------------------------------

I’ve been toying around with a number of games recently, succeeding in a couple of world conquests using obscure little backwards counties and failing spectacularly with a couple others, but nothing that really struck me as gripping material for an AAR. Somehow, even world conquest has become too…easy; too…old hat.

--------------------------------------------------

I went to pick up the missus last evening after work and, as I was stuck in the annoyingly endless downtown Toronto rush hour traffic, I was listening to the radio. Is it just me, or is everything pretty bland and tuneless these days? Anyway, I resorted to my in-car CD collection and one of my old stand-bys happened to be in the case…a “best of” collection of songs by George Thoroughgood and the Destroyers. I haven’t listened to it in quite a while now, so I decided to pop it in.

*sings* “I’m bbbbbbbbad. Bbbbbbbbad to the bone….”

*sings (a little later)* “Move it on over….”

*sings (even later)* “One bourbon, one scotch, and one beer…”

Hey! Now there’s an idea. Hmmm……

------------------------------------------------------

Many (many!) moons ago I saw George Thoroughgood live in a little basement bar in Toronto. It’s a night I’ll never forget. He came on stage a little after 9:00 and began to play to the small but die-hard crowd of about – I’m guessing – a hundred people. If you’ve ever seen him live, you’ll know what I mean when I say he was in one of those moods. 10:00 came and went, he drank a couple of beers during the set, and he kept on playing. 11:00…midnight…1:00…still playing and not even a break! He was, by now, chain smoking. Watching him, you could tell he was already ripped before last call, but he and the band were rocking away and those of us in the crowd just kept ordering drinks for him (and ourselves). The place was rockin’! Finally last call came around and he says “I don’t know about you folks, but I say let’s do it ‘til I drop.” We, enthusiastically, all agreed that this was a great idea. Then one of those magical things happened…the bar owner locked the doors, bought everyone a round of drinks, and left the bar open for as long as we felt like staying or George felt like playing. It was now a “private party” and so no longer 100% illegal…more like 99% I guess. I ended up leaving at about 5:00AM, only to go home, shower, and get to work for 7:30. I was ripped, but still functional…

--------------------------------------------------------

I’ve been rather entertained by Rictus’ little instalment headers that have listed his poison of choice, music selection, and mood at the beginning of each post. Norgesvenn, I notice, liked the idea since he’s doing it too in his latest AAR. I even referred to my Smithwicks consumption in my recent reign as the Doge of Venice.

Now someone (I’m not naming names) had the audacity to suggest that my playing style might suffer a little bit as I drink. I wondered to myself whether there could be any truth in this? I felt like I was playing well, but it’s hard to tell when your more than half pissed. I wonder…..

---------------------------------------------------------

So, that, in a nutshell, was my state of mind last evening as I listened to George.

One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer

Great song. Catchy title. Heck, it might even make a catchy AAR title….

One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer

One of the recent surveys revealed that people seem to like knowing what country you’re playing…

One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer

Bourbonnais. Scotland, and – well, it’ll come as no surprise if you’ve read my Venice instalments, but my favourite beer in the whole wide world is Smithwicks, a product of Ireland – Eire.

One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer

So. Play a multi-country game as Bourbonnais, Scotland and Eire. Sounds fun, and they’re not the easiest countries in the world to choose…particularly when you consider the kind of trouble they can get into when left to their own devices.

Still, that nagging problem remained: I don’t really have time to write a second solo AAR along with everything else I’m doing.

One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer

Stamina.

One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer

“I don’t know about you folks, but I say let’s do it ‘til I drop.”

One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer

Now that’s an evil idea…

------------------------------------------------------

Today, I went out and procured a dozen litres of Smithwicks, a 26-pounder (i.e. 26oz bottle) of Jack Daniels, and a 26-pounder of Islay Duras (one of my favourite single malt scotches). Here’s the plan:

Tomorrow (Sunday June 9th), at precisely noon EST (which would make it either 5:00PM GMT) I am going to begin a new game. The rules are…

(1) I will play each country in turn, using the very hard/furious settings, starting with Bourbonnais.
(2) I will play at 1 minute=1 year setting, with no pausing, reloading, or other cheating allowed. I am allowed to pause when first loading and when ending a five year period in order to do some housekeeping. I am also allowed to pre-set the game by starting it early and doing an initial DP adjust and expenditure for Scotland and Eire before loading up as Bourbonnais.
(3) At the end of five years (i.e. five minutes later) I will save the game and exit back to the intro screen.
(4) I will then have about 25 minutes to write and post on this board an instalment for the 5-year period. It won’t be particularly fancy, but I’ll tell you what’s happening and how I’m doing.
(5) Exactly every half hour, I must start the next five years of play – no matter what.
(6) Depending on the country, I must also drink either a 12oz glass of Smithwicks, a 1¼ oz shot of Jack Daniels, or a 1¼ oz shot of Islay Duras during that half hour. Half an hour, one country, one drink. The drink must be the one appropriate to the country.
(7) If one of the countries gets annexed it’s out of the loop and I just play with two (and lose the variety in beverages).
(8) I will play until I can (a) no longer play or, (b) no longer post, or (c) until midnight, or (d) all three counties bite the dust…whichever comes first. Considering it’s 2 drinks an hour for twelve hours, I somehow doubt I’ll make it to midnight. Once I quit (pass out?) the AAR is over.

So there it is. By the end of tomorrow you’ll have your answer as to how good (or bad) my stamina is and just how bad my writing gets when I’m hammered. Think of this as the WKRP sobriety test. Once I’m done, though, the AAR is finished, one way or the other.

Since I won’t have the time (or probably the ability later) to post screenies, I’ll take one at the end of every change and post them sometime Monday. If anyone fells like keeping me company, commenting, and/or providing moral support, I’ll read and (time permitting) reply during my next half hour.

So, less than 18 hours from now, the party begins.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT: Having now finished the madness, I think you'll find there are a few parts that require clarification/translation/etc. so I'm int the process of going back into each post to do so. Anything you read in this red text is an after-the-fact edit...

Well, I thought I was going to either go to a movie or read some 19th century fiction on Sunday, but I guess I know what I'm doing....

I suppose if we see you suddenly very late for a post, then you have finished the AAR?

I so do appreciate those who are willing to attempt absurd things for others' enjoyment.

If I were you I'd try to get Bourbonnais wiped out fast. Jack Daniels... [shudder]

I fear you're right. I've been known to drink large quantities of beer, and I love scotch, but I'm terrified of the potential damage of the bourbon. If any nation goes, I hope it's them that bites the dust first. Frankly I'm really hoping to keep Eire alive as long as I possibly can but I don't trust the AI. As long as I can have a beer to chase the others I may be okay, but going on straight hard stuff my bring things to an early end. I hope not. You may want to keep that in mind when placing your bets.

It's looking like there will be a bit of an audience anyway, which will be nice since I have this scary feeling that this could be one of the more FOOLish things I've decided to do.

Oh, and LD...I told those very friendly men in the white suits to drop by tomorrow evening with a stomach pump.

Slightly under twelve hours and counting...

I believe it's actually "12" (at maximum), but let's not get picky...

My bet is that the bourbon gets to MrT quick-like, and after furious annexations of French minors, Bourbonnais is destroyed by BB wars against the AI, and MrT is unable to stop the trend (being pretty strung out, ya know ) by the time he returns to it... thus allowing him to end up surviving for quite some time.

Eire, meanwhile, will have an easier time of it, since not only is it the beer, but it's an island, and as such should benefit to some extent from fewer neighbors who don't know how to use ships.

Scotland, meanwhile, will do just fine, dismantling England early on and remaining for the most part invulnerable from there on out.

All in all, I think he'll last no more than, hmm... 9 hours.

I am doomed to living in the gutter because I did no revising because I was reading this AAR (see, my language skills are already failing.)

Looking forward to more drunken antics, interesting choices of country though.

Hmmm... I fear that some beurocrat here in Norway will use this AAR, coupled with Rictus' (and perhaps mine) to demand that copies of EU II are marked with the following:

"Health Department Warning: Playing EU II may seriously impair health and lead to alcoholism. Do not drink and play"
