Mughal Empire 1534-1557

Humayun was weary as he rested his head upon the silk pillow for the last time. His hair had long since turned to grey, his face wrinkled, but in all else his appearance was still imaculate, dressed in silks from China and anointed with the most expensive oils and perfumes from all the corners of his empire and beyond. By his side knelt his son Akbar, recently returned from the Persian court. It boded well for the Empire Humayun thought, that Akbar was on such good terms with their neighbours, his fostering there had been one of the many sacrifices Humayun had forced himself to endure to secure the future prosperity of the realm.

But as he lay there now, gone was the youthful warrior who had held the realm together, gone was the Khan who had brought terror to the northern steppes, who had fought civil war, Spanish invasion and a desperate attack by Orissa and Bengal that came close to overrunning half of northern India and reached the very gates of Delhi itself.

Now the Empire was at peace, a peace that had lasted over a decade and had ushered in a new enlightened age in the twilight of the Great Mugals reign. Some said Humayun had grown soft, that a harsher regime was needed, one that continued to look for ways to expand. But Humayun was adamant, he had had his fill of war.

His reign had been long, and during it he had secured the borders of his realm from petty rivals both within and without what had now become an empire. The friendship with the Persians, which had begun as a strained affair had now reached new levels of understanding and cooperation. Thamasp, King of Kings, from his capital in Isfahan, had renounced all Persian claims upon Herat and the other western Mughal provinces that some in Persia still hungered for. The bargaining had been fierce but in return the Mughals had given the western half of their Uzbek territory to the Persians in perpetuity, along with a two province wide corridor leading to much of the north. Only the lands of the Khazakh Horde did the Mughals claim overlordship of, and so through which secured a passage to the fabled expanse of lands to the east and the legendary homeland of the Mongols. The remnants of the Uzbeks were peacefully integrated into the Empire. Soon Humayun knew, what remained of Bengal and the Khazakh horde would be peacefully assimilated too, but there lay a task for his son, for now he grew weary. His time on this world was all but over, the passing of an age had arrived and it was time for his son Akbar to assend to the Mughal throne.

Holland 1561-1579

Joyous with their newly won independence the thrifty Dutch inhabitants began a multitude of simultaneous projects hitherto prevented by the largely conservative and not-so-innovative former Spanish administration. With Spain’s consent the formal title of ‘vassal’ was removed from the new republic’s name. A new system of tax collectors was introduced; a somewhat larger fort was established around the capital at great expense. A small but efficient fleet of transport ships was launched and a peasant militia was raised to deal with internal order. Reformist believers soon flocked to the dock of Amsterdam eager to spread the word of God in the rest of the world and to attempt to build “New Paradises” in the lands of the Heathens.

Small harbours and trade posts soon sprung up on St. Helena, Bourbon and Madagascar. Parts of Sumatra and Borneo were colonized. Buru, Seram and Timor were discovered and small colonies were set up. To the north lay a great collection of islands that was explored and named the Philippines in the honour of the wise Spanish King Felipe. Soon Dutch colonists were thriving on these islands as well.

Meanwhile in Europe Dutch merchants established themselves all over the markets. Careful to not establish any unwanted monopolies, which happened by accident at times due to the sheer effectiveness of the traders, a substantial presence was established at the end of the period substantially increasing the revenues of the republic.

Internally the government fought to limit the privileges of the nobles and strived to give more rights to the burgers.

Brandenburg 1561-1579

The incompetence of Saxony's King couldn't be tolerated, As far as I'm concerned the king of Saxony was worse than a plague. At the age of the great War between Austria and La France, Saxony joined in the war in spite of Branderburg's desperate calls of peace between protestant brothers. I urged Saxony to return to conciousness. That war was a total disaster for Saxony, not only it got a bankrupt but lots of rebels. Brandenburg took a difficult decition. It was imperative to build up Saxony and unify german protestanism by annexing that country. Fortunately the international context of peace and understanding between european countries made things easy.
About Pope's new order of the world against Muslim countries, I find his words more aggressive than an ottoman invation, the only thing the Pope will bring to Europe is unstability, death and suffering. I urge the protestant countries to take a reasonable distance of catholic ones since counter-catholicism was declared.
I have no intentions in entering a new great war anymore, that is for primitive countries. Religious tolerance was proclaimed in BB which is intending to follow the way of properity, innovativeness and liberalism. I hope our german brothers of Austria understood this.

Good session all, I would say mostly due to Juvs Great host we made great strides today compared to past.

The session was mostly one of at last peace, France converted to Reformist though and internal wars raged through the country, as catholics tried dto regain power. Seems Reformists have gained the upper hand though, perhaps more can be heard from the king of france once this conflict is resolved and he is able to return the foreign theater.

A short war raged in the east between russia and the muslims also. Resulting in no significant gains.

England had a war against muslims also, unsure what the war was for.

RUSSIA 1557-1575

After the last war in Denmark, the royal advisor there was changed and this new, a German, was more able to properly treat the Russian ambassadors with respect. Friendly relations was again established. The Swedish envoy in Moskva, herr Stein, wanted to dig up some old testament written by the last Teutonic Grand Master, or was it not written yet? It was all clear, the Swedish King wanted to justify his gains in the Baltic states by proving that the lands were justly gained from the dissolved Teutonic Order. In order to get this grant from the Grand Master, a puppet Teutonic state was created by Sweden in Livonia, and the poor Grand Master were forced to cede all his land to his neighbors, Russia also got some, Livonia and Estonia was granted us. Currently these are held by the Swedish occupants, but we can wait, at least the claim are there to see and have been recognised by all Christians.

In the south, Persia attacked Siberian Horde, to get the last part needed for them to get access to the East. To prevent this the Czar declared war, and attacked. It all ended in disaster, several good leaders perished in the south against the Muslim armies of Persia and their allies from the Mughal Empire. Some 100.000 soldiers were also lost in this defence of Mother Russia, they will all be remembered. White peace was signed after a few years. Despite this, Persian agents again planted plague infested corpses in our country, leading to two outbursts of plague. Meanwhile, the Crimean Khanate attacked our vassal the Golden Horde and annexed them. This will not be forgotten, although the dog has now allied himself with the Sultan of Constantinople.

After the war, Russia focused on economic development, building two grand refineries for destillation of vodka, this drink of life. In Moskva, the Great Opera and the Russian Library, destroyed by the Poles long ago, were rebuilt. A university was founded in Novgorod to spur new inventions, and a foreign drill instructor from Hessen was hired for a outrageous salary to impove the moral and discipline of our soldiers.

It seems that if Russia can not go East, it will adopt the ways of the West.

Holland 1580-1600

After a stock exchange had been created in Amsterdam, transferring the city into one of the world’s most important economic centres, inflation was pressed down to a minimum again after raising steadily for the last couple of years. The money printed was invested into a refinery transforming raw sugar from the colonies into rum and other products. Private investors contributed with yet another distillery.

It was decided to introduce a centralized monarchy limiting free trade somewhat making it more affordable to establish new merchants but also giving more privileges to the nobles which was not popular among the Monarch’s advisors.

A bold explorer, van Huyten, soon sailed from Amsterdam to the Pacific to explore that new continent Australia rumours were talking about. Some small communities were established here and also on a new, earlier unknown continent south of here, named “New Zeeland” after the origin of the discoverer.

Holland’s first colonial cities, New Nijmegen and Kroonstadt, were founded on the island of Bourbon and in Mindoro on the Philippines. After failed negotiations with the Sultan of Brunei Dutch soldiers conquered the province of Sabah and made the Sultan a vassal of Holland enjoying our protection and supervision. Only a short while later English troops, to our outrage, attacked our vassal and annexed her. Diplomatic overtures to England had also gone unanswered in a most impolite fashion so far.

Dutch trade was slowly building up outside of Europe at great cost but yielding high returns once established. Holland however kept out of Trade centres where she wasn’t welcome.

So far all went well but at this time things were starting to go awry. All of a sudden Spain demanded all of the Philippines without compensation. Holland had in previous discussions stated that she was willing to cede these islands to the Spanish crown if only proper compensation was given. Without compensation Holland had no plans of simply giving away her colonial possessions so the demand was refused. As the century drew to a close it was noticed that Austria and Spain were engaged in peculiar military exercises at the Dutch border. It turned out that the Spanish crown had sold Flanders and Brabant to the Austrians. Brussels and Antwerpen, populated by Dutch people, deserved a better fate than this. This affront could not go by unnoticed.

Some years later the Portuguese were good enough to lift their trade embargo so that Holland could initiate limited and respectful trade in Ivoria and Malacca. As soon as this process was initiated something happened that made the picture complete. Spain hit Holland with a trade embargo and soon thereafter Poland and Portugal followed suit. All these actions originated from Spain it was concluded, all because tribute without compensation was demanded and rejected. It seemed the eternal struggle between the righteous David against the tyrannous Goliath was to be necessary once again. Spain already had too many puppets dancing at her slightest whim; these had at least been properly rewarded for their servitude.

As the new century dawned a Dutch national bank was instituted, an East Indian trade company was initiated and a great military reform was made concentrating mainly on naval activities. New refineries were created in this process. It was however clear that the success of the Dutch republic had created envy in many jealous neighbours. The future ahead was at least as insecure as the road of the past…

To the Parliament of England

We, the Republic of the Dutch people, are most disappointed in the irresponsible way your nation has acted in the past. Our polite letters of co-operation and division of spheres of interest of the colonial areas have gone unanswered. As if this was not an affront big enough your colonial authorities has acted in the most provocative way annexing one of the Dutch Republics vassals without even so notifying our state of this. These actions will not be accepted. We demand actions to be taken in the hope that the past actions of the English government was a mistake to be blamed at the confusion of Queen Elisabeth’s reign and the situation in general.

The Dutch Republic hereby demands:

1. That the sultanate of Brunei be released and that the vassalization be broken so that she might once again join with Holland as a vassal.
2. A written apology to be delivered for the delay of the answer of the courteous state letter regarding colonial affairs between our two countries.
3. That a response is curtly given to abovementioned state letter sent over 20 years ago.

Failure to comply with the following most reasonable demands will see the Dutch Republic forced to take the actions against English aggression and insolence that she sees fit. This note is delivered in the sincere hope that our two states might come to an understanding in a peaceful way.

To the Archduke of Austria, King of Bohemia, Hungary and Bavaria Rudolf II…

We hope this letter finds his Majesty in the best of health and wishes him a prosperous and long reign. We wish to congratulate our German brother nation to her outstanding achievements now and in the past. We hope our two nations will always maintain a civilized and courteous relation between us.

It has come to our knowledge that the Austrian branch of the Habsburg family recently has acquired new territories adjoining ours, namely the fiefs of Flanders and Brabant. These areas had until recently a strong resentment against their former overlords and wished nothing else than to form their own state or join with our own glorious and peaceful nation. However strange it might seem, the recent transaction seems to have lessened the actual amount of revolts and uproar in these areas, but in heart and soul we all know what the real longing of the people of these provinces is. A transaction of lands, how cunningly planned it might be, shouldn’t hide the fact that these areas do not welcome foreign rule. We now plead with the wise and most just sovereign of the German Lands, make this people free!

If our minor request, as we sincerely hope, is met we would be delighted to sign a treaty of friendship with the Austrian Habsburgs, so that we might both, once again prosper and live in harmonious brotherhood for the best of all. We hope for a hasty reply to our letter.

Sincerely and respectfully…

The Dutch Republic

I think all in all a very good session, only problem was some bugs wreacking havoc on our save game, causing repeated rehosting untill we finally got it fixed. Then we ran smooth for the rest of the session.

Interesting events taking place, a colonial war between england and france, war of prussian succession in the northern regions, whats next? Should be fun next time.

Events in the Kingdom of France during the years of our Lord 1580-1601

All had been peacefull among the western nations for far too long it seems. Something was bound to happen sooner or later, looking back on the peacefull days, longing for those to return... we must turn our face to events happening now.

A number of letters were sent to the english monarch, in attempt to make them understand colonisation of sierra madre could not be tolerated as it would sever the colonial ties of the western french colonies, practically braking the empire in half in north america. None knows that happened to the letters, as the english monarch now afterwards claims he never received them. (An obeserver might conclude this could have been works of a skilled assasin wanting to cause conflict between the 2 great nations.)

So despite numerous attempts to make contact with the english monarch no reply had been received. The engláis had played the french for fools before threatening the french on more than one accasion, obviously thinking themselves clearly superior. The french had no choise but to let it be known that they would not be toyd with like this, and so it began.

In the year of our Lord 1597 France and her allies declared war upon the kingdom of England and her allies. Soon negotions revealed that both alliances saw no need to escalate the conflict as it clearly was a matter between France and England and the respective nations would settle it amongts them selves. The french armies delt a quick decisive blow to the english colonies, but the english did regroup and recover... Francóis controls most of the Engláis north america now including manhattan and the war drags on to its 4th year and english are preparing for a counter offensive, shall be seen how the war develops, england may soon start to lose stability as her people begin to desire for peace.

RUSSIA 1580-1600

Russia is once again plunged in to a long war. It started off when Denmark and Poland partitioned the former Russian ally Prussia, a horrible but destined deed. This tiny statelet couldn't possibly survive for long and it is heard that the Commonwealth protects them well now. After some harsh exchange of letters between Sweden and Denmark, Sweden declared war, and Brandenburg joined in, as did Russia, ever the truthful ally. Poland feebly attacked Brandenburg in the south. Sweden did this to protect Prussia, still existing then, but soon the truth became obvious, the goal was to take provinces from Denmark. Sweden didn't care for the independence of the Prussian state. After severe losses in the war Denmark have now ceded Holstein to Brandenburg and the rich Gotland and Östlandet to Sweden. Denmark have lost half its European possessions to the gredy Swedes and Brandenburgians, in just a few decades.
Russia lingers on in the war, now only against Sweden and it is a draw. Estonia and Livland is held by Russia while Sweden just stormed and took the fortresses of Karelia and Ingermanland. The question is whether will Denmark prevail somehow or finally be totally overtaken by Sweden?

WHAT warnings!?!??!?! For 5-6 years we never received ANY warnings from the French about Sierra Mahre. Okay, we have been very busy with our own matters, so we may have missed one warning, but we never saw any repeated warnings from France, private or otherwise.

We would have been perfectly happy to cede Sierra Mahre to the French, had they made it more clearer to us.

HOLLAND 1601-1625

The last centuries peaceful times were soon to end. Holland was now afflicted with several plagues, supposedly spread by Russian witchdoctors through Sweden and finally arriving in Amsterdam with visiting walloons. The nobles demanded their old privileges returned which allowed the government to further reign them in but at great cost to national stability.

When the most reverend Archduke of Brandenburg made an official visit to Amsterdam there were several attempts on his life for unknown reason. Two young Dutch noble bodyguards were struck down by the assassins saving The Kurfürst’s life but yet again afflicting the stability of the realm.

While trying to establish a small trading post on the mountainous islands the natives call Hawaii, meaning “welcome dear stranger, please kill our warriors and make your own people the owner of these islands” if our explorers were correct, the present conquistador reported a chance of about one out of three to succeed in doing it. No less than eleven trading ships were sent before the trading company could report success. Are the Russian witchdoctors mayhaps putting diabolic curses on us just because we burnt down their quarters after the plague incident? The ensuing colonial attempts were only 5 in number before success was reported. It is clear this conquistador skipped many a class at the University of Amsterdam during his “explore the world and conquer it” education there.

The reformed church sent out some missionaries to perform conversions in the world and in their own catholic capital. Naturally none of these succeeded.

To add further injury our fierce competitors gained another Centre of Trade in Mauritius next to our crown colony Bourbon no matter that our accounting methods and trade secrets are far more advanced.

Meanwhile no less than three colonial raisings had to be put down and unhappiness among the peasantry happened.

The only progress made during the period wes what money could buy. New cities were founded on strategic locations outside the coast of Australia and New Zeeland. Governors were installed in all Dutch cities and that worthless island New Guinea was claimed, exorcised and colonized. The French were allowed to keep the small Gold deposit on its eastern coast. Some trade posts were established in the north of the Euro-asian continent. A Mughal city was strangely enough situated on this desolate coast. What awe they must have felt when our 40 gun galleons passed in the Nordic winds…

To sum it up the period began in prosperity and ended in a destabilized Holland with very little to present for her efforts. Cursed are the Devilworshippers who sent this hex upon our land. Once they are found bonfires will light up the night at the dams of Oosterbech. Still the Statholder and his foremost advisor are hatching cunning plans to balance the balance of events their way. God be with us!

The Dawn of 17th Century, age of reformation in the kingdom of France

After long exhausting years of battling for freedom from the catholic church, the frenchmen found new vigour from their triumph in the colonial war against England. Manhattan, sierra madre and austrilia had changed hands, the people of France rejoiced and sung songs in the streets.

The remaining catholics in the country are immigrating to better hunting grounds, and unity of the nation is beyond anything it has been to date, economy is thriving and bringing newlyfound trust in the peoples hearts.

Many new colonies were founded and the borders of the empire were expanded in the new world vigorously. The nobles demanded that ivory would be brought to them from africa for their pleasure, and so it was done. Now the noblemen of France may eat their dinner with forks with ivory handles, a true testimony of the nations greatness.

Many years of peace passed in west europe, but now a new darkness is looming over the horizon in the east and north... shall a war be provoked by the barbarian germans? Or can this be avoided and more luxuries be gained to the happy people so they may eat their bellies fat, drink wine and breed like rabbits.

RUSSIA 1601-1623 (?)

White peace was signed with Sweden after long years of war. Russia spent some time developing it's infrastructure and absorbing Kazan, a former vassal.
Sweden declared war again after some ten years of truce, this time led by the indominitable Gustav II Adolf and General Wrangel. Denmark didn't stand up for us, like we have done for them so many times, and even if we are still allies on by an old treaty, we will not honour any calls and consider them enemies. All contacts will be broken. Russia will try to make friends with the mighty Hapsburgs, for future protection and mutual aid. Also Poland decided to silently watch the downfall of the Czar's armies and fortunes, they will probably soon be isolated from the Baltic Sea as well, when Brandenburg and Sweden finishes the encirclement. The Russian armies and fortifications didn't stand a chance against the Swedish genious, nine or ten provinces were soon taken and two more was controlled by rebels. And the Swedes didn't stay one winter in our land, just storming everything they reached. A humiliating peace was signed giving away Ingermanland, Kurland and Kexholm. Then civil war erupted...

Brandenburg

King Georg visited Amsterdam. It isn't usual for a king to leave his own country during unstable times but God knows it's for a noble cause. Despite the violent incidents in the catholic capital, the King of Brandenburg enjoyed his stay on Holland. Moreover our lord was very amazed about the progresses in this country, so far one of the best economy of the world and an example of an advanced and civilized country.
Paris and Madrid are going to be visited soon in order to find a peaceful solution to the tense situation in Europe between protestants and catholics. However Poland binding Prussia doens't help much.
Subjects to be treated: Denmark and England's admission into french alliance, economic help to these countries, the descolonization of memel and Prussia, Manhattan's situation, religious tolerance in Europe, heathens' ilegal expansion over Siberia, St. Petersburgo's situation.
every attempt to frustrate this intent of peace is going to be considered an aggression and BB won't tolerate it.
For a better Europe, I expect good will and cooperation, thank you.

Europe 1647

World War...death is everywhere. Many territories were plunded, burnt, destroyed. Shame on Europe which has returned to dark age.

Holland 1625-1647

Being banned in both Portuguese and Spanish Centres of Trade Holland sought new ways of gaining larger influence in the world trade. First China was convinced to let Holland protect the trade of Guangzhou and the adjoining port of Kowloon together with Chinas colonial adventure on the island of Sumbawa. Some year’s later China agreed as well to let Holland control the trade of Shangai. France meanwhile confiscated the province of Kansai in Nippon.

Internal events were of a more balanced nature than lately but still multiple assassinations of nobles, threats of corruption and plagues maintained Dutch stability at a very low level threatening trade in the entire world. Inflation was reduced during an exceptionally good year and a manufactory on New Zeeland was consumed by a firestorm.

Around the year of 1640 it was understood that the Austrian authorities never intended to negotiate the reunion of Flanders and Brabant with Holland and the Dutch Government officially declared a hostile stance towards Austria until the matter could be resolved, if in no other matter on the battlefield.

Holland proceeded to utilize her Casus Belli on Austria to declare war on the Germans occupying Dutch culture provinces. Austria on her turn proceeded to call her allies and Holland suddenly found herself phasing a huge alliance. Feeling she had no possibility to win her birthright after this aggressive move she felt forced to call her own allies and a grand war had begun of which here the Dutch perspective will be explained.

The war begun with Dutch forces overrunning and besieging colonies on Java. While busy in Asia Austrian forces struck the main army in Zeeland under Nassau’s proficient command. The Austrian forces routed the Dutch army after both sides taking large losses. Dutch reinforcements were raised and a new army was sent to besiege Brabant. A second cross-river assault led by the Austrian heavy cavalry was repulsed, partly with the help of late arriving French reinforcements. After Brabant was invested The Dutch army proceeded to besiege Flanders that soon fell. At this point Austria was ready to make peace and cede the two provinces to Holland. Although Holland had suffered over 40.000 infantry losses in the war all Holland now united in 8 provinces rejoiced at the victory and felt the sacrifice well worth. It was now hoped good relations could be maintained with Holland’s Austrian neighbour.

The rest of the Austrian alliance would however not let Holland enjoy her new won victories. Portugal initiated hostile actions from her base in Guangdong next to Guangzhou and captured the province. After Dutch forces had captured all of Java the navy made an amphibious assault in Guangdong behind the back of the Portuguese army. Soon all provinces in this area was under Dutch flag, the Portuguese army was annihilated and her fleet blockaded in the port never made it pass the superior Dutch naval forces waiting outside.

Part of the victorious force was sent to siege Malacca as a response to the Portuguese attack.

France had at this time forced Spain out of the war and Holland received Jakarta as compensation for her efforts even if the province of Sunda had been hoped for as well.

English troops had meanwhile captured Saba in north Borneo. Newly recruited forces from the Philippines were landed and soon routed the English and recaptured Saba and started besieging English possessions in the area.

After the fort in Selatan fell a curious event took place. The entire Far East fleet under the able Admiral De Reyter (576) commanding 54 warships waited for the British flotilla to exit the port. 7 warships and 6 transports were sighted and a battle took place. The fleets were both in their respective home waters and of the exact same technological level. Still the English at those terrible odds managed to win the engagement routing the Dutch fleet and sinking several warships. After reorganizing in port De Reyter easily sunk the remaining 5 English warships but the engagement tells of excellent English seamanship at the worst of odds.

Swedish forces had been landed in England proper and when peace for the exchange of the province of Bandung on Java was refused over and over Dutch forces were shipped to England itself to help the Swedish forces there. The expeditionary force fought more rebels than English ordinary troops but routed many disorganized militia forces and captured London, Essex and Midlands. The army is at present besieging Yorkshire. Rebels currently control all other English provinces. The English government will hopefully soon be forced to realize that the war is lost and cede their Indonesian possessions to Holland. The vassal of Brunei should be released and its vassal status broken so that she once again can be a Dutch vassal as before the English aggression. Soon peace and prosperity through trade shall be granted Holland and other states alike.
