A Confused Yugoslavia

I saw something kinda neat last night. I'm not sure if this is a bug or just strange so I'll post here.

Yugoslavia joined the Axis then the following day, Yugoslavia left the Axis and joined the Allies. Meanwhile, Yugoslavia's ideology is very near the Fascist extreme.

I kinda think this is a bug but I don't know. Maybe Yugoslavia's proximity to Italy and its side-switching tendencies has caused confusion amongst the Yugoslavs.

I was playing an inconsequential minor and I didn't influence anyone so I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything.

Silvercloud 03-07-2003 14:38

Hey there Satcho:cool:

I played Soviet Union two days back with 1.05 and saw the same happen....wonder if it is set to go like that...

Snack 03-07-2003 15:37

In the beginning of World War II, Yugoslavia was pressured by Germany and Italy to join the Axis powers. Italy was losing its war with Greece, and Germany wanted Yugoslavia's support before aiding the Italians by invading Greece. Yugoslavia's regent Paul actually signed the Tripartite Treaty in Vienna on March 25th, 1941, but this was against the will of most Yugoslavs, and he was met by a coup d'état when he returned on March 27th. Army General Dusan Simovic seized power, arrested the Vienna delegation, exiled Paul and instated the 17-year old crown prince Peter as the new king. This was said to make Hitler furious, and the Axis decided to attack both Yugoslavia and Greece on April 6th. (The German high command also decided to delay Operation Barbarossa 4 weeks because of this, something which turned out to be disastrous for Germany.)

I found it Satcho, its part of the new 105.txt events:

[quote]event = {
id = 5016

trigger = {
random = 80
ai = yes

}
}
name = "AI_event"
desc = ""
style = 0

date = { day = 1 month = january year = 1941 }
offset = 30
deathdate = { day = 30 month = june year = 1941 }

action_a = {

command = { type = alignment which = democratic value = 40 }
command = { type = alliance which = ENG }
}
}
[quote]

105.txt is not read by the game though since it is not in events.txt

Thufir Hawat 03-07-2003 16:08

It's actually at the bottom of the ai.txt events:

Vulture 03-07-2003 16:10

Yup... The event is still not perfect though and will be perfected more.

Satcho 03-07-2003 16:19

Interesting

When this happened for me it happened in 1939, November, I believe.

I didn't think to check Yugoslavia's government but their ideology was still very Fascist.

I must admit, this is one cool event though. Is there going to be a "The Yugoslavs realize going against Hitler was a bad idea and quickly do an about face back to the Axis but Hitler crushes them anyway" event?

Kudos to you Paradox guys, I really like this event. :D

I included the "democratic =100" thingy in this event exactly to prevent them from being too fascist after the coup and the alliance with the Allies. As Vulture said, the event is still being tweaked (some more trigger conditions etc), so maybe this value has to be set even higher.

If your going to tweak this event, might I add my own thoughts?

I think it would be better if Yugoslavia just leaves the alliance and its facism rating turns midway to Democracy (whatever points that might be towards Democracy). I don't think its realistic that they would join the side thats fighting the Axis as then Yugoslavia is open to invasion.

I am not sure if there is such a thing as Casius Belli in HoI like in EU2 but the description on the roll over for "Leave Alliance" says that the former alliance or the leader nation of the former alliance gets a Casius Belli on the nation that leaves the alliance. If that is in the game maybe add to the event a super hit on the Casius Belli that Germany or the Axis has over Yugoslavia as Yugoslavia has no chance whatso ever facing the Axis in a open declaration of war which is basically what joining the Allies is. I seriously doubt any nation leader in the position that the Yugoslavians faced would openly declare war on the Axis.

t0bbe 04-07-2003 02:19

This happend to me to as Sovietunion. The axis attacked me 1940 in the summer and yugoslavia joined the axis in winter 1941 but some time after that ( have just started an offensiv against them and had crushed there attack against romania that I had annex) they left the axis and joined the allies.

Thufir Hawat 04-07-2003 02:35

Most of the time for me, when the event fires, it's nearly instantaneous, i.e., only one or two days after they join the Axis, they turn right around and leave the Axis...and instantly join the Allies at the same time. This seems rather odd, and only serves to cause Yugoslavia to be a conglomerate of Axis minor extensions, as (in various hands-off games) they have been annexed at least once by Germany, Greece, Hungary, Romania, and Italy.

That's pretty much what happened IRL.

The thing is that I tried that, but Yugoslavia never joined the Allies. In fact, they always rejoined the Axis after some time.

Yup! :) However, the overhauled event will have some additional trigger conditions. For example, to prevent this from happening too early, the event will then check whether Austria, Czechoslovakia or Poland exist.

Also, as it is an ai event, it will not affect the human player of Yugoslavia - he is free to do whatever he wishes.

In one of my handsoff games I Yugoslavia was changing from Axis to Allies very quick. The interesting was that there were german/italian units and yugoslavian units in the same province without fighting each other (although at that time they belonged to different factions). At first I thought that it was some exp. force or so, but the province changed control between Germany and Yugoslavia very quickly. And I definitly saw German troops attacking, tacking over the province and just a few moments later the province just conquered by Germany turned back to orange, while German and Yugoslavian troops were peacefully sitting side by side at the campfire. . .
As it turned out Yugoslavia managed to take over the whole balkans including North Italy and Southern Germany this way until my game crashed.
Must have used some really effective Intelligence Service - bribing whole armies

In my Germany game the Yugos sent me a Exp Corps of three Divisions. Yugslavia changed to the allied side and Italy Annexed them. After 6 months I still have my Yugoslavian Expeditionary force lol. Is this a bug or what?

It happens all the time... Consider it WAD... Hungarian or French forces helped with the defense of Berlin even though those countries were overrun by the Red Army and the Allies

In my last game as Germany, I've had the exact same problem. When I've tried capturing a Yugoslavian province no battle would start. Eventually I've figured out that although Yugoslavia was part of the allies, they were still together with me in a war against the Chinese, after editing the save game and removing Yugoslavia from the war, it worked normally again.
