Religion Wallachia is a Orthodox nation, loyal to the Patriarch of Constantinople. The head of the Wallachian church is the Voivode, equal to the Metropolitian of Tirgoviste. Orthodoxy: Orthodox is the state religion, and by far the most common. Catholism: As our Christian brothers they are tolerated and respected by the State. Equal to Orthodoxy. Other Christian Sects: As our Christian brothers they are tolerated, but are not allowed to spread their belief. Meetings which includes more than 50 peoples, are not allowed. Jews: Are tolerated, but are not allowed to build synagoges or other religious jewish buildings without the allowance of the Voivode himself. Not allowed to spread their belief. Muslim: Are not Tolerated. Will be expelled or worse. Pagan and Wichcraftry: Not Tolerated. Will be sentenced to death if found guilty through which-trial. Claims Wallachia claims all Romanian lands as theirs. This includes Wallachia, Moldavia, Dobrudja and Bujak. Wallachia also claims Transylvania, as it is heavily influenced, and has a lot of Romanians in it. |
A letter arives from Moscow,
"Voivode of Wallachia, I extend my hand in friendship to you. It filled me with joy to once again no that a Orthodox state is organized. The Orthodox religion as of late, has won many victories in Russia, and I have been successful in liberating many of our people in these ancient lands. I hope that Wallachia and Russia may prosper in the future. written by his own hand in Moscow, Vasily II, Czar of Russia, Emperor of the Russians" |
A man in garb of Constantinopolian fashion arrived at the capital city. He took a look around and enjoying what he see. He mused to himself,
It is a quitely interesting city for provincal town. It looks like there would be a good site for a possible trade between Wallachia and Roman Empire. Yes, it would be good for both of nations. Then he walked some more until it is the time for him to go to the Palace. He walked to the guards and spoke with them, I am Michael Ducas, ambassador to this court from Roman Empire if his highness would accept me. Would you allow me to pass and speak with Voivode? He fell silent. |
A Hungarian man enters the court. Despite his youth, his weathered expression betrays the breadth of his experience.
"Prince, I bring your greetings from His Majesty, King Matthias of Hungary, Croatia and Slavonia, Palatine of Transylvania. "The message I bring is one of friendship, that one day our states may be considered as brothers. His Majesty hopes to meet personally with your honoured self one day. Until then, I request leave to remain here in Tirgoviste to represent His Majesty's will and to serve Your Grace, Wallachia, and Hungary, as best a man can." |
The King looked upon the young Hungarian.
"Hmmm... wery well. You are young, but as wize as the wizest ambassadors. You come in the name of the Magyar King himself, and shalt be given a House in the royal streets of Tirgoviste. These roads are the only safe roads in our country. The rivaling Danesti clan is still hiding somewhere. They are beaten, but not destroyed. You shalt be given two guards to protect your home, and yourself whereever you go. But be careful. Don't consider the city as safe. Bandits can't hurt at daytme, but at night, the streets of Tirgoviste can be cruel. May our nations live together in peace. You may leave. At the same time one of the guards came in: "A Roman ambassador is here to speak to you, your highness." The king said: "Let him in." |
Michael Ducas strolled into the court and bowed to King. He introduced himself. Then he spoke,
Emperor Alexius is gladden to see that Wallachia is open to the world once again. He hopes to establish the friendship between Wallachia and Roman Empire. Also, he invites you to send the merchants to Constantinople. That we may have a good trade arrangement. Maybe you would like to send an ambassador to Constantinople? He fell silent as he looked around. The thought occured to him. He spoke, Perhaps you would like to send several of your people to Constantinople for studies? We have plenty of teachers, priests, and scholars within Roman Empire. We wish to establish the real college. Constantinople, at present, is almost finished rebuilding. We are building a college, and we invite your people to come and learn. Perhaps one of your children? Then he fell silent once again. |
The King Replied:
Hmm... my sons. Why would I want to send one of my sons to Constantinople? One of the advisors whispered something into his ear. Wery well. I shall send my oldest son to Constantinople, of course, only because he is the only son old enough to go to such a school. Of course, on some conditions: Quote:
I hope you can accept those demands. They are wery reasonable. Wallachia intends to stay friends with you Romans, you are the only close ethnical brothers we have. That's right... The King continued: You romans may see us as barbarians, but both our language and our culture comes from the Roman Empire which once stood so strong and proud. Where do you think the name Romanian come from? Hah, I guess you didn't know that... well, tell that to your emperor, and tell him that Wallachia would like something in return... but that, we'll discuss later. I will send an ambassador to Constantinople, he will come with my son Mircea's escort. May the Roman Empire once again stand strong and proud! |
A tall man clad in the bronze and purple of a noble greek man enters the Wallachian court. He is accompanied by three men clad in travelling cloaks, carrying a small chest. They all bow before the Voivode and assembled court.
Hail to thee, Noble Vladimir, brethren in faith, I am Ioannes Vatatzes, lieutenant in the Varangian Guard and emissary of His Imperial Majesty, the one and only Basileus. We are glad to find your realm is such a state of prosperity and peace as it has only been a short time since the barbarians from the east expelled His Majesty from his city and the treacherous Franks have taken residence in Greece. Now more than ever, those of the true Christian faith must stand together against both East and West and so I offer you the friendship and alliance of the Basileus. As a token of our friendship, His Majesty has send you a gift. Without being commanded, the three soldiers step forward and lay the small chest before the Voivode and open it gracefully. it cointains a rather old, dry piece of wood. It seems so brittle that even the slightest touch might turn it to dust. This is a piece of the True Cross upon which our Saviour has suffered and died. His Majesty sends you this valuable gift in the hope that it may reaffirm the strength of your faith and the strenght of the Orthodox church. With your permission, I shall take up residence here and act as My Emperor's ambassador. Thank you. Grimly, he bows and then then men leave the court. |
The Wallachian Nobles stared like they had seen a ghost, or the Lord himself.
You bring me a gift, a piece of the true cross. Such a gift isn't ususal. There are only a few of these artifacts, less than a half-dozen. Your Emperror Teodor, have not only won the respect of the Voivode of Wallachia, but also the title Duke of Prahova, one of the many great Wallachian rivers inside my realm. (ooc: Every duke in Wallachia is duke of a river, and the area around). Your King, Teodor is must be a great King, indeed. I wish to meet him in personal, it would be me an honour. I agree that the Orthodox countries are only getting weaker, but let us not worry. Vasiliy II of Russia has won several victories against the Tatar (Mongol) Hordes. Atleast, there is some orthodox victories somewhere. However, I have other concerns. I have laid the old struggle between the two christian religions behind me. I see the Catholics as our brothers in faith. I have already sweared friendship with Hungary and Roman Empire. There are worse enemies out there. The Muslims are my only concern at the moment. So I will not go to war against catholism. However, I don't owe anything to the French. How dare they occupy the lands of our brothers in Greece, and in Athens of all places! That's something I don't like... Then again, there's not much I can do about it, Wallachia has entered a period of rebuilding, my country is still weak after the years of Civil war and fighting against the Danesti clan. You too shall be given a house. I can see you have brought your own Guards. Your gift is seen upon as a everlasting Friendship with Byzantium. May Greeks and Romanians live with each others in peace! (ooc: Teodor is the "romanianzed" version of Theodor or Theodorus. Since he will becoma a Duke, he will be caled that in Romania.) |
A man then walked in and presented himself to the Voivode,
"My name is Joseph, an ambassador to this court from Vasily II of Russia, should you allow me. My Czar of course hopes for good relations with Wallachia, as you are brothers of our faith. Things are starting to get back to normal in Russia after the dreadful war and my Czar has shown an inclination towards greater unity in the Orthodox world. He of course hopes that you will support Russia in these ventures. I have many issues that I would like to discuss with you in the future." |
Michael smiled as the King gave him history lesson. He thought to himself in an upper class type of mind,
So, that is what Emperor was trying to tell me, that they are not mere backward people but brother. I guess that I was in error. However, it is still provinical place but at least it isn't barbarian. They are truly brothers. Then he spoke to King, I apologize for giving you the impression that Roman Empire considers you to be barbarians. It is me who see your people as barely barbarian, not Emperor. And even then, I didn't see you as barbarian, only as provinicals. He told me to considers your people as brothers, as fellow Romans. I will not make that mistake again. Please forgive me. He hated to apologize for he is one of top family within Roman Empire but he had to, the honor demanded it. They are indeed brothers after all. Then he spoke again, Your demands are very reasonable. Your son shall have a house near the Great Palace and Hagia Sophia. There is another orthodox church close by as well in case he don't like to mix with Catholics since Hagia Sophia is for both Catholics and Orthodox. Anyway, your demands are accepted by Emperor. May our two nations be close friends! He saluted the King and fell silent. |
The King answered Michael:
Do not excuse yourself. For our lands have been fighting civil war for long, a war were you couldn't trust anyone. That war is now over, and I have put the Boyars loyal to me in power as dukes. That kind of wars is usually seen upon as barbarian in the rest of the christian world. We are a war-liking people, my title, given to my by my father, is Voivode, or Warlord as you may call it. Indeed, we are a war-liking people. My son shall be on his way, and with him, I send my ambassador, Alexandru Contra. My son can go to Hagia Sofia, he's not in Constantinople to learn theology, but war, first of all. And of course Latin and Greek. May our two nations continue this friendsship. Rumors tells of a shadow in the east (ooc: OE is player controlled again, I think), so we will need this friendship more than ever. You may leave my court. |
The King said to Joseph:
Wery well. You too should get protection, if needed. We will be more than honoured to be let the protector of Orthodoxy have an embassy in Tirgoviste. And you should be its ambassador. So be it. If the Czar allows it, I will send one of my ambassadors to Russia, to represent me and my people. May Russia continue it's way to even greater glory, for Russia must be the most glorius orthodox nation of it's time. May our two countries continue our Friendship. |
Vatatzes hands the Voivode a letter.
|
Vatatzes is seen speaking with the Voivode on several occasions.
|
Vatatzes stoked his beard as he moved towards the Voivode's enormous audience chamber. The chamber's roof, held by massive beams of oak, had been blackened by the myriad of candles on the chandeliers hanging on heavy steel chains from the ceiling. A few noblemen and clerks were present when he stepped forward and bowed to the enthroned ruler.
Hail to thee, Voivode, I have written letters to the Basileus describing our minds and He has sent me to negotiate the terms of an alliance for the good of the Orthodox faith all over the world. We shall stand side by side, as brothers in faith, and defend the faith with out swords against all those who seek to oppress us or deny us what is rightfully ours. We shall combat heresy wherever we find it and welcome all those souls who have seen the light of Our Lord Jesus Christ into our arms. We shall deny the infidels of the east the shores of our lands and prevent the schismatics of Rome from plundering our lands. Those are the terms the Basileus has conceived of. He awaits your word on this matter dear to him He bowed once more and retired. |
The Voivode rose from his throne, a big golden chair, standing of the top some stairs, with a giant flag hanging from the wall.
The Voidode spoke:Have I ever doubted the Basileus' word? And neither will I do it. I find those terms agreeable. I hereby, by the power that has been given to me by my father, Mircea I "cel Batrin", acknowledge "the Union of Saint Andrew" as the military alliance Wallachia enters into. May it be our advisor, whenever we needs advice, May it be our thoughts, and make us wery wize, May it be our guidance, and always show us the light, May it be our sword, when we will need to fight. That should be the law of the Union. So say I, the Voivode of Wallachia, which word can not be mistrusted. May the Union of St. Andrew forever be our guidance. |
"Union of St. Andrew," Vatatzes thought. "Very fitting indeed, naming the alliance after the Orthodox churche's patron saint. The Basileus will be pleased."
He kneeled on the floor and made the sign of the cross. Then he rose once more, grasping the standard with the Imperial emblem - the cross surrounded by four 'B's representing the phrase 'Basileus Basileon Basileuon Basileonton' meaning 'King of Kings, ruling over those who rule' - ripped it off the lance and handed it to a squire. May those words ring forever true and may the insignia of the Empire be held in honour at Your court for all to see that God favours this Union of St. Andrew. I shall send word of the joyous news to Sparta at once. |
