EEP Hapsburg dynasty
I though it sensible to gather all suggestions made so far for the Hapsburgs into one thread. Basically there have been two main ideas:
- what EU2 has as a united Austria in 1419 actually is an anachronism. Austria, Tyrol and Styria were separate territories ruled by different branches of the Hapsburg family, just like the Wittelsbach principalities of Bavaria, Palatinate and Holland. Having them united is not only ahistorical and inconsistent (the Hapsburg and the Wittelsbach possessions should definitely be handled the same way, but also unbalancing, allowing for premature expansion. Hence, a new 1419 setup was worked out in the old Austria thread (to be found here), creating Tyrol and Styria as independent countries in the respective provinces. There are RMs, excellent relations and an alliance between this countries, but no vassalage (there was no superior branch). Austria inherits Styria by event in 1457 and Tyrol in 1490. I'll repost these and other events into this thread - Austria effectively never inherited Burgundy. After the marriage, the emperor's son Maximilian was not Duke himself, but only as husband of the Duchess Marie. When Marie died in 1482, Maximilian had to pass the throne to the couple's son, Philipp the Handsome, because the estates wanted their "native Duke" instead of getting incorporated into Austria. Eventually Burgundy was united with Spain when future Emperor Charles V who had already been Duke of Burgundy since 1506 ascended the Spanish throne in 1516. The event scheme should go like this: 1477: Death of Charles the Bold; Austria gets RM and alliance with Burgundy, Burgundy cedes Picardie and Bourgogne to France and Alsace to Tyrol, France gets shields on Artois, Flanders and Franche Comté if it decides to declare war on Marie and Maximilian 1482: Marie dies, Philipp the Handsome becomes Duke, Maximilian remains in effective control and appoints administrators; Burgundy becomes an Austrian vassal around 1492: Treaty of Senlis (trigger conditions need to be discussed, probably dependent on French inheritance of Brittany and no complete French victory against Hapsburg Burgundy); France abandons its claims (i.e. shields) on Artois, Flanders and Franche Comté 1516: Charles ascends the Spanish throne; Option A Spain inherits Burgundy, Option B (controversial) Burgundy inherits Spain Some other ideas: - There were large protestant communities in all Austrian provinces except Tyrol, hence it could make sense to let Styria and Ostmarch turn protestant (this is impossible for the province of Austria since it would make Austria convert in most games which I'd rather not see) - before the secularisation, Austria had no claim on Salzburg nor ever tried to annex it. The shield on Salzburg should be removed - the Hapsburg Vorlande in Southern Germany (Sundgau and Breisgau) should be represented by Tyrol owning either Baden or Alsace. Both Baden and Strassburg were not nearly significant enough in the 15th century to justify their existance, however Baden rose to some power later and makes for more interesting events, which is why I suggest that Strassburg is completely removed from the game and the province given to Tyrol - the Austrian capital could be moved several times. Friedrich V had to flee to Linz (in the province of Ostmarch) after the capture of Vienna by Matthias Corvinus in 1485, his son Maximilian preferred the Tyrolian town of Innsbruck as residence, and only Ferdinand returned the court to Vienna. It's not that badly needed, yet would be nice for accuracy - the Hapsburg inheritance of Bohemia and Hungary in 1438 after the extinction of the Luxemburg dynasty should be modelled in EEP. IIRC Fate has done some events for this. - It would be nice to remove the Hapsburg bonus in the imperial elections so that the Hapsburgs really have to work and pay to get elected as they had to historically. The only way to do this is to let Austria and Spain exchange tags with some pagan nation, however the downside is that then Spain will loose the other effects of its tag (Tordesillas and CBs against non-catholics). Any ideas how this could be done? |

Also, Burgundy will need an event to move its capital to Brabant in 1430. That capital move should probably also give Burgundy Dutch culture. In return for getting Dutch culture, Burgundy should lose its cores on all French provinces excluding Franche Comte, Artois, Picarde, Lorraine, and Burgundy.

Burgundy definitely needs some other events to be directed better, as well. In fact, besides colonists and Brandenburg-Prussia, it is the country that could profit most from the ai change command. This way, it could start out with a much more civil and anti-French ai, preventing it from getting involved in the usual neverending wars against half the world, and become more of a warmonger in the late years of Charles the Bold's rule. Other events could be the mortgaging of Alsace to Burgundy by Tyrol and Charles' attempts to get his hands on Lorraine, Helvetia and the Rhineland.

Here's a set of modded leaders for Burgundy. The inheritance event for Charles the Bold, if they choose to stay independent, needs to wake the fantasy leaders near the end.

I just found a site that has the Habsburg regents who ruled the Netherlands in place of their Spanish overlords. Should these regents be used instead of the Spanish Habsburgs? The only downside is that the list stops in 1592 with the death of Alexander Farnese.

A few event ideas:
Also... (this has been said before) Maximillian should be a relatively good military leader. Code:
historicalleader = { |
Event ideas in chronological order (being updated periodically):
(Austria) 1422: Austria and Hungary enter into a royal marraige and possibily an allaince. +200 relations between the two nations. Albert was Sigisund's only reliable ally, and provided troops for Sigsimund's campaigns against the Turks and the Hussites. In 1422 Albert married Emperor Sigismund's only daughter, Elizabeth of Luxembourg. The Emperor declared that Albert would be heir to all his estates and titles after his death, and fully supported Albert as the future king of Bohemia and Hungary. (Austria) Hussitenkriege (Hussite Wars): After the execution of Jan Hus on July 6, 1415 in Constance a revolutionary movement formed in Bohemia, partly inspired by social concerns and nationalist ideas and directed against King Sigismund. As his son-in-law, Duke Albrecht V of Austria, had participated in military campaigns in Bohemia and Moravia starting in 1420. Hussite troops invaded Austria between 1425-1431 and devastated the provinces north of the River Danube. As a consequence of the Hussite wars the Austrian national defence system was reorganised on the basis of districts. Effects would include +1 quality, +1 fort in Ostmarch, -1 tax value in Ostmarch, +1 land, -25 gold, and there would be about 3 events (with offsets) where rebels could pop up in Ostmarch represting Hussite raids into Upper and Lower Austria. (Austria) January 1st, 1438: The duke Albert of Austria was crowned king of Hungary, and furthermore was elected King of the Romans on the 18th of March. He was also elected King of Bohemia in May but he had to fight to secure that kingdom, while he was the unopposed ruler of Hungary. Hungary should become a vassal of Austria, and enter an alliance with Austria if they aren't already in one. Both Austria and Hungary should receive temporary CBs on Bohemia if the Hussites are sucessful in taking over the country. (Austria) October 17, 1439: Albert died in Hungary of dysentery. In early 1439, the Turks were advancing into Hungary, and so Albert gathered an army to repulse them. He reached Buda, and then advanced through the Bacska swamp near the Danube. Neither army engaged the other, as both had to lie low due to dysentery. Evenutally, the Turks retreated, but Albert died shortly after while traveling back to Vienna. Albert died when he was 35 (for comparsion his cousin lived for 70 years), and had only reigned over Hungary for two years. If he had survived, Hungary would of remained as part of the Habsburgs. If we go off into alternate history perhaps Austria could receive cores on Hungary until the death of Albert (hypothetically 1457), and Hungary would remain an Austrian vassal until 1457. In 1457 we would return to the historical monarch Frederick of Styria. (Styria) In 1439 Friedrich III became guardian of the minor Sigmund of Tyrol (until 1446). Tyrol would become a vassal of Styria until 1446. (Styria) In 1440 Friedrich III became guardian of the minor Ladislaus Postumus of Austria. Austria would become a vassal of Styria until 1452. (Styria) In 1452 the Austria Estates force Friedrich to release Ladislaus from tutelage. Austria cancels its vassalage to Styria. Mailberg Federation (the Estates), was founded by a group of nobles, knights and representatives of Upper Austrian and Lower Austrian towns. Led by Ulrich von Eyczing, they entered into an alliance against Friedrich III in autumn 1451. Their objective was to have Ladislas Posthumus released from tutelage. The principal aim of the Estates, however, was to increase their own influence. After having laid siege to Wiener Neustadt, where the king was in residence at that time, the Estates succeeded in liberating Ladislas in September 1452. (Austria) In 1457 Ladislaus dies, and a dynastic conflict begins between Albrecht VI and Friedrich III (they are brothers). Austria should be able to choose between the two candiates. If they choose (unhistorical) Friedrich III, they return to being vassals, but if they go through the historical route rebels and revolt risk appear in Vienna. Albrecht VI ruled over Austria until 1462, when the castle of Vienna was seiged by Friedrich. (Austria/Styria) In 1463 Friedrich is recognized as the sole ruler of Austria. Either Austria should inherit Styria (most practical), or Styria should inherit Austria, and then become Austria (probably for human Styria). (Austria) In 1485 Matthias Corvinus, the king of Hungary, occupied Vienna, called himself Duke of Austria. In several wars (1477 and 1482) he had tried to take Austria and Styria away from Friedrich III, who also called himself King of Hungary. Matthais resided in Vienna until his death; he did not dare, however, make his (illegitimate) son Johann his successor. Hungary should gain a temporary CB on Austria until 1490, and if Hungary occupies Vienna, an event should move the Habsburg capital to Linz. Additionally, the Hungarian capital should be moved to Vienna. (Hungary) On April 6, 1490 Matthias died in Vienna. With Matthais' passing, Maximilian I of Austria was able to regain Vienna. Hungary's capital should return to Magyar, and Hungary should give the Austria province to Austria. (Austria) Maximilian I purchased Tyrol and the forelands (Alcase and other Rhine lands) from Archduke Sigmund in 1490. Although, he did not buy the lands in the normal sense of the word. Sigmund adopted Maximilian I, which meant that the Tyrol passed to the only surviving Styrian line of the Habsburgs. Austria inherits Tyrol, and the Rhinish lands. (Austria) Year: 1494 Name: Bianca Sforza Description: In 1494 Maximilian had but a single son and daughter, and was without a wife. In 1494 Maximilian married Bianca Sforza in an attempt to increase the financial wealth of Austria, while creating more suitable heirs. Bianca was both barren and wildly extravagant: the marriage was a disaster. Damn woman! -50 gold (Spain/Castile) Year: 1508 Name: Juana the Mad Description: The union of Philip and Juana ended with his unexpected death in 1506, thus plunging Juana further into insanity. During their marraige, Juana had been very protective of her husband. After his death, Juana refused to allow his burial, taking the coffin with her as she moved from castle to castle. Only the direct intervention of her father forced her to allow Philip's burial. Furthermore, Juana was to be confined within the castle of Tordesillas for the duration of her life. Bury Philip, and confine Juana: +1 stability -75 gold Allow her to mourn eternally: -1 stability (Austria) Generallandtag (General Provincial Diet): 1518 Emperor Maximilian I assembled a diet in Innsbruck, in session from January to May and attended by the Estates of the hereditary Austrian lands. After the Diets of Mürzzuschlag 1508 and Augsburg 1510, it was the Emperor´s third attempt at establishing a centralised administration with a common government, common defence and common finance for Austria and the Empire. 70 participants attended the Diet, presided over by the governor of Tyrol. On May 18 the results of the debates on court order, armaments and general complaints were summarised in 3 documents. The Emperor promised that monies would be put to reasonable use, the Estates were granted better status. This general diet was the first all-Austrian parliament and marked an important step toward a centralised state. Effects: +2 centralization, +1 stability. (Austria) In 1521/22 through the Edict of Worms and Brussels Karl V gave Austria to his brother Ferdinand I. If we are using the Burgundy setup, Burgundy should be inherited by Spain (or vise versa). Karl will only rule over Spain, the Netherlands, and any Italian holdings. He will however, be the ruler of Austria from 1519-1522. Ferdinand I will rule over Austria from 1522 until 1564. (Austria) Kuruc Rebellions: From the 15th century onwards Hungarian revolutionaries against the Habsburgs were known as the Kuruc (meaning carrier of a cross.) During the Habsburg domination of Hungary there were a number of challenger kings, and each sparked rebellion and instability throughout the country. This would be a random event tied the the ownership of key Hungarian provinces. The effects would include: -1 stability, +2 RR for 12 months, and a revolt in Buda, Magyar, Croatia, and Translyvania. (Austria) Event: Ferdinandeische Hausordnung Date:February 25, 1554 Description: On February 25, 1554 Ferdinand I, together with his three sons, issued a proclamation on the division of his patrimonial lands. Maximilian II was to inherit the Archduchy of Austria both below and above the River Enns, Bohemia and Hungary, in addition to the title of Emperor and the highest position; Ferdinand II was to inherit Tirol and the fore-lands, and Karl II Styria, Carinthia, Carniola, Gorizia and Istria. Each was also permitted to carry the coats of arms, banners and title of all territories. Issue the decree: - Create Styria as a vassal in the provinces of Styria, Krain (if Austria own it), and Istria (if Austria owns it.) - Create Tyrol as a vassal in the provinces of Tyrol, and Alcase/Baden (whatever we decide to use as a represntation of Rhine lands.) - +2 stability (three happy sons) - +100 gold Give it all to Maximilian II: - -5 stability (two unhappy and powerful sons) - -100 gold (attempting to buy off the sons) - Revolt in Baden/Alcase, Tyrol, Styria, Istira, Krain, Vienna, and Ostmarch. Give it all to Maximilian II, but compensate the other sons: - -1 stability (two unhappy and powerful sons) - -500 gold (attempting to buy off the sons) - Revolt in Baden/Alcase, Tyrol, Styria, Istira, Krain (Austria) Event: Extinction of the Maximilian line Date: March 20, 1619 Descripition: From 1599 Matthias was a rival of his brother, Emperor Rudolf II, and was finally recognized by the Archdukes as the new head of the family in 1606. In 1608 he was granted the Austrian Danube countries, Moravia and Hungary and in 1611 Bohemia. Since he had no children upon his death in 1619, the Styrian line of the family inherited the his landsd. Fresh blood: - Inherit Styria (technically... Styrian Habsburgs inherited Austria after Matthias) (Austria) Event: Extinction of the Tyrolean Habsburgs Date: June 25, 1665 Description: Sigmund Franz was the second son of Leopold V and Claudia von Medici. He became bishop of Augsburg without consecration in 1646, bishop of Gurk in 1653, and bishop of Trento in 1659. After the death of his brother Ferdinand Karl, Sigmund became the Archduke of the Tyrol. Sigmund renouced all of his ecclesiastical posts in 1665 and contemplated marriage but died before he had any male children. He was the last male issue of the Tyrolean line of Leopold V, and with his death Tyrol finally passed to Austria. Wonderful: Inherit Tyrol |

I'll lower the stats to threes or twos on all of the leaders you mentioned. (Maybe one 4 on Max... he was fairly sucessful against the French considering Austria was so poor tax wise.) I also need to fix the leader's start and death dates too :o.

I think some things need to be changed about your Treaty of Arras events.. There should be no removal of Burgundian shields on France since Burgundy, and all other French minors as well, shouldn't have the cores on all of France. On the other hand France shouldn't loose its core on Picardie and Bourgogne, considering that Louis XI tried to recapture Picardie and that Bourgogne clearly remained part of France, while it does not deserve shields on Franche Comté or Artois at start. The Treaty of Arras should secede Picardie to Burgundy and cancel a possible vassalage, since these were the main terms of the Treaty beside Burgundy's acceptance of Charles as French King. |

Perhaps the 1419 could be changed to where Burgundy is at war with France, but starts as a vassal. If at anytime Burgundy gets peace with France, a generic Treaty of Arras (valid during reign of John the Fearless and Philip the Good) pops up that would improve relations, and scede Picardie, Artois, etc. to Burgundy and any other non-shield French provinces to France. In addition, the vassalage would be canceled with +3 to stability (the reasoning behind this is to give the player some incentive to use a historic event to cancel vassalage, rather than doing it himself.) |
Oh, he's TRAUN! Can we call him that? In that case I think his stats are fine, he was a very good general in the War of the Austrian Sucession. However his start date is too early for my books, move to 1725 maybe. I mean he didn't command in Italy right? And his deathdate is definitely too early as in 1740 he hasn't even fought his important campaigns.
As to Palffy I think the 45 years sounds like too much. You sure he was commanding armies for all that time? |
He's in the game already :D. I'll make sure to search the leader files by title rather than name. Should all leaders by named that way? (it seems to be how Paradox does names)
While we're adding leaders, we could edit already existing start/death dates as well. Code:

I finished up the monarch lists for Styria, Tyrol, and Austria. From it you can see the dates where Styria and Tyrol were relatively independent from Vienna. One other thing I noticed was that Friedrich IV (of Tyrol) was a regent for Friedrich III (of Styria) until 1435.
Monarch files I also just posted some event ideas for the representation of the three Habsburg lines after the death of Ferdinand II. Quote:

These are all good ideas, but if Austria has to inherirt so many things to grow large, they will attain a BB from Hell, and all that annexing will make it VERY hard (and quite expensive) for Austria to become HRE.
This should be taken into consideration, as it can seriously alter the game. |
